All the SLRs I owned came with ,or a leather case was available for the unit.
This was convenient and protected the camera well. It stayed on the unit all the time.
Is there any camera cover of this nature available for 10D?

I haven't seen a camera recently that had a genuine leather "never-ready" case available for it and, in reality, with film cameras it was a pain in the neck whenever you wanted to change film in a hurry.
Many manufacturers do have soft cases available on special order and they can accommodate zoom lenses and some can be attached to a belt so that all you do is use them like a holster. The camera is put into the case lens down and you just draw it out of the "holster" just like a six-shooter.

I just wanted to hang the camera on my neck, on a trip to capture moments in my grand children lives. I find without a case the camera seem very vunerable.

I'm not sure if it's going to fit but how about checking into the case that's available for the Elan 7/7e?

Just noticed they have some cases for the EOS 1V and EOS 3 as well:
