Hi,

I noticed the pictures taken with my V3 (S230) shows 150dpi in advanced properties (windows xp) whereas a Nikon Coolpix 3100 had 300dpi. A Sony P8 had even worse dpi... at 72 only!
What gives? What does this mean?

My picture compression setting is at Superfine (best) whereas the other 2 were set at the second lowest compression (dunno the name of the setting).

Hope you guys can enlighten me.

Robert.

This subject just keeps coming up! If you check further in this group, you will find more detailed explanations, but basically, DPI is NOT an attribute of a digital image. Depending on context DPI is either a description of the density of a PRINT, or instructions on how large to make a print of an image.

For example, my camera's best image is 1200x1600. If I print that image at 300 DPI, the print will be 4" x 5.3". If I print the same image at 150 the image will be twice the size or about 8" x 10.6".

Most image software will allow you to set the DPI setting in the directory information. This setting is nothing more than the default size to print at. Some software uses the DPI setting to size the print, other software ignores it and sets the print size another way.
