Forgive my ignorance but i am not sure what some people on this board refer to when they talk about shooting in manual mode with their s400. are you talking about ISO, MACRO,ETC. or is there something more. Please enlighten me with all the details if you can.

It's not a true manual mode but you can control a LOT of stuff, such as:
White balance, exposure compensation, light metering modes: spot/center weighted/ evaluative , autofocus points, picture effects, autofocus lock, auto exposure lock, flash exposure lock, Infiniti mode, iso settings...
