I have a 550EX and a 420EX. I would like to achieve lighting effects of 2 front flashes left and right of camera angled at 45 degrees to the subject. I was thinking of getting an ST-E2, but I am trying to think why that would be better than getting another 420 EX. I could achieve the same effect and many others. Oddly enough the 420 EX is also a cheaper option. Any thoughts.

,.. I "think" that the 420ex will not serve as a trigger,.. only a slave. ( someone correct me if I'm wrong)

So, if you don't mind the 550ex being tethered to the camera,. then I don't see why not get the 420EX either?

You are correct CyberDyneSystems. The 420EX only works as a slave. But I already have the 550EX and I can't think of any reason to get the ST-E2 instead of a second 420EX.

Rob Sigler,
What soft boxes do you have? Where did you get them?

You can control the lighting effect better with the 550EX and the ST-E2. Buying another 420 would be a waste of money it's just a good auto flash. I first picked the 420EX due to the cost and wished now after I started the photo classes that I would of purchased the 550EX. It has alot more features where you can control the fstop of the flash. Check out B&H and they sell a complete kit of 2-550's and the ST-E2 for $899.99.
