When youn buy from b+h and get it shipped to Canada what kind of tax and duty do you pay because things are definattly cheaper even with shipping.

GST, GST and PST or HST depending on what province you live in. Exactly the same tax you would pay if you bought from your local camera store. The price in US dollars is converted to Canadian dollars and tax is computed using the same percentages.

You will most likely be charged a brokerage fee as well. Canadapost is about $5.00 but UPS is about $35.00. Fedex and DHL are in between somewhere. This has been my experience anyway. There is no duty charged.

i wanted to know about this too... i talked to a b&h rep on the phone on friday and apparently yes, you do get charged for customs, but still i have a 3000 dollar order coming in, and it would still be cheaper than going to the local montreal store and buying all the stuff there... truly!

You do NOT get charged an import duty at customs, what you are charged is GST and PST (if applicable) based on the invoice supplied by B&H converted to Canadian dollars, and a brokerage fee charged by the shipping company to do the paper work so the item can clear customs duty free.

There are a number of posts on this topic. If you ship by UPS Expedited then there are no brokerage fees, or rather they are included in the shipping fees. It is more expensive than shipping by USPS ground but it does include a tracking number. Last article I received from there took 5 days including the weekend.

Camera Equipment is Duty Free, but you do have to pay the applicable sales taxes.
