My IBM MicroDrive takes about 20 minutes to download through a MicroTech USB 1 reader. I bought a used IBM PCMCIA reader for about $18 on eBay and it takes about 12 minutes to download a full MD (to my 866 MHz notebook).
I have a SanDisk USB 2 reader and it is about the same speed as the PCMCIA, probably limited by the speed of the MD.
Many PCMCIA card readers do not accept type II CF cards. Also be wary of how the card is ejected, the MD cannot be squeezed by the top & bottom surfaces.

I almost always use the adapter that came with my IBM microdrive. It is a bit slow to "review" a number of images at a time, but transfer speed seems to be better than USB.
If you have a laptop get one.
I use type I and II cards with no problem.

the PCMCIA Spec will allow transfers at speeds faster than the Microdrive is capable of,.. so yes it should be as fast as a Firewire or USB2 reader.
And they are handy. I have the empty adapter in the laptops card slot all the time. It's just allways there and obviously,. completely portable.
