This may have been asked before here but, I couldn't seem to locate it & I am new so... I thought I would give it a shot. I bought a Canon 300D when I decided to finally go digital. I have the silver model & then noticed they had the black model a few months after I purchased mine. I have always been into the black look & wanted to get one but never did. Which model do you like & why? Thanks!

Mine's silver. Not sure if I would care much if it were black or not. I take pictures with the camera, not of it.

get whatever you like best. it's the same camera. I got the silver because it was easier to sneak one in that looks like my Rebel T2 film camera. Some say the black looks more "pro", but it's all a matter of preference.

That actually goes back and forth over so many years. It even happens to the point and shoot cameras, like the Olympus when they kept changing from black to silver to champagne back to black with their Stylus series p&s 35mm cameras. For a while people kept insisting that the silver finishes would cause unwanted reflections in their photos (this was more with the silver tripods and stands than with cameras, but people still mention it every now and again). Honestly though, I don't care what it looks like. What the picture looks like coming out of it is what concerns me.

Personal preference for the most part. The picture quality, functionality and longevity would be exactly the same either way.....

The Silver actually has one advantage I found: It's more kid friendly. To be specific, and thought it was more or less just an observation, kids are less weary of me with a silver SLR then of my black 10D both with battery grips. Especially when I have a 50mm prime attached and need to get in close for a tight portrait, Im sometimes amazed that after a while they forget you are there. Go figure.

i had a silver and then i bought the black, which i prefered. the only canon DSLRs that are silver are the rebels -- and the black body 300d looks just like any other pro or prosumer DSLR.

FWIW, i sold the silver for $700 w/o lens about a year ago....and i paid $599 for the black...so that worked out well.

i just sold the black body on ebay for $495 with grip, extra battery and 512mb of memory.

i feel both had great resale value especially since i've had taken thousands of pictures with both (over 10k on the black body).

i don't have a 300/350d, but if i did get one i'd probably get the black body. i just don't like the silver one for some reason. i think it just looks cheap lol. personal preference. get whichever one suits you. personally, i'd just keep the one you have, or upgrade to 350d.

Black 350D (20D doesn't count - no color choice there). Because it matches my lenses.

Sorry, no great white wonders in my bag.. perhaps some day. Then I'll hafta work out how to paint the 20D white.

The black one is cheaper on B&H....which seems odd. Not sure about the black, but the silver sure shows scratches!

I like the fact that the XT is available in silver, and I took it upon myself to buy a silver model. It's an extremely unpretentious camera, it says, "Hey, it's all good. Have some chips."

i remember in the 90's when a friend bought a silver, 35 mm film rebel and he showed it to me.. i was like WOW now that looks like a real camera! I thought that the fact that it was silver and black made it a PRo camera... I knew nothing about cameras then, still dont.I do wish I got the black version when i bought my Tamron.

I know it sold on Ebay cuz I'm the one who sent you an email asking if you would take a check. I placed a bid & it was lookin' good for a while there but, wanted to wait until close to the end to make my final bid. I had a family emergency & by the time I got back to my PC & Ebay... it was gone! Ohh I was sooo bummed!

I bought my black 300d when they first came out with it. I don't know call me superficial but I felt better with my decision. It was the black 300d or the nikon d70. I'm glad I went with the canon so I could learn from ya'll. But in the end its the same camera, so just go shoot with it. Also I think the 300d/grip combo looks better in black (prepares to get flamed).

The same thing happened to me, except I never knew anything about B&W (or even cameras for that matter) when I bought my silver 350D in September. I bought it from Best Buy for $900 with the kit lens, and at the time, I still think it was a fair price. I also got it financed for 12 months, no interest.

Of course I would prefer a black 350D so I could look more like a pro. However, I realized that my preference of black only occurs when I'm not shooting. Once I take my camera out to take some shots and put my eye up to that viewfinder, it's suddenly all about photography and not about something as irrelevant as style. And I think that's all that matters. If my shots are lousy, let me know, and I'll go out and get a black XT.

I also noticed that when I shoot, I only look down at my lens and not the camera. When I observer other SLR photographers, I always look for the lens and their camera body second. I would assume that normal people do the same.

Hey, if you really don't like the silver, you can always tape up front parts of the body with electric tape. If you make the right cuts, bends, and seals, I'm sure it would look pretty stellar! That would be the ultimate ghetto camera body though.

When did black become the "pro" look. My dad's first slr was the AL-1. Many of the camera's of the time looked like this. Did Canon think the Silver Rebel would be a throwback to this style of camera? Any thoughts?

Well, when I first looked at the new 300D it reminded me right away of my AE-1 & AE-1 Program that I use to have. I thought my old AL-1 was black though?

Did Canon think the Silver Rebel would be a throwback to this style of camera? Any thoughts? Some time before the AL-1. If you think back, the top of the A-series line was the (black only) A-1.The top of the Canon line was the New F-1 (black, and the F-1 before it was also black).Canon's first AE camera, just below the F-1, was the EF (also only in black). It actually goes back to the Leica M-series RFs, and the idea that a black body would be less conspicuous in the hands of someone wearing a (typical for the period) dark suit. The point that a shiny chrome body would be more conspicuous on a battlefield didn't hurt, either, I'm sure. IIRC, the AL-1 was, along with the AV-1, pretty far down on the A-series product line.

Thank you for reminding me Jon. The camera I had was the A-1 and not the AL-1 and yes it was black. I remember now because I had four Canon cameras at that time, the A-1, an AE-1, and two AE-1 Program's with one in all black & the other in black & silver.

i think the whole silver v. black thing is silly. its the same camera! i think the higher price for the black version proves that some people care more about appearing to be a professional photographer than actually being one. and that's fine, but i'll take the extra $20 or so and buy an extra battery.

NordieBoy

It's not a higher price for the black one.

They're just hoping that if they drop the price on the silver ones they can get rid of them :D

Agreed Spencer. It's similar to how some buy the Canon battery grip for the 350D as opposed to the Opteka one which is easily $80 cheaper ($140 versus $60). They are basically the same exact grip, but I guess the Canon logo makes you take better pictures or feel more comfortable.

Have fun with either color! I haven't seen an EXIF file listing body color.
