Challenge #12 - Motion

I am looking for shots that suggest motion. These don't necessarily have to be frozen action shots, although these certainly imply motion. Good composition of still subjects can imply motion as well as subjects already in motion. Or maybe the camera is in motion. Whatever technique you choose, I want to see the subject and/or background move.

If there is anything unclear about the contest, please post a new thread. But lets try to keep the thread clear of posts other than photos until the end. Good luck!

Neither Mark Webber or I are going to win, but at least the shot is topical! Taken during Practise session 3 at the Australian F1 Grand Prix, today.

Here is my submission. I know the photos aren't the best in the world, but this is to be motion, remmeber! Facing the sun yesterday (that's why the photo quality is so poor), I got this picture of a duck landing in the water. I just had time to set the camera to multiple shots and started firing away.

Title: Coming in for a Landing!
Camera: Canon S2 IS
Settings: Not sure, I had to take them whatever setting it was on.

Comments: I gave him an 9.5 on the landing

Picture 1 - Flaps out - landing gear down - good steady approach
Picture 2 - We have splashdown - wings tucked in - nice form
Picture 3 - wings crossed (for drag) - sharp left turn to complete the stop

The contest is officially over now. I will have the results later today.

I just want to say that I am really impressed with all the entries. Some meet the contest's requirements better than others, but they are all great shots.

Again, congratulations to all the entries. They are all great shots. But there are a few that stand out to me. Obviously, my decision is based on how well the photo captures motion. But with so many good ones, I had to also use other criteria to judge, like exposure, originality, composition, etc. So, here you are:

1st place - snowrdr - "Screamin’" - The subject is so clear yet the background has a consistent motion blur. Add to that the placement of the motorcycle on the right of the image and the angle of the rider and motorcycle. It "screams" motion.
2nd place - Diminished29 - "making a splash" - Throughout POTN, I have seen these shots and this one is one of the best I have seen. I would like to see any slr owner say anything bad about point and shoots after seeing this. Very clear and the timing was great. The splash and the wave really move.
3rd place - teekay - "Pencil Sharpening" - I really like the motion blur of the hand. The subject is very original and I think the lighting is neat looking. The angle of the composition also adds to the movement.

Very well done to the winners - I had loads of ideas for this comp, but they all failed in the execution of them, so congratulations to everyone who managed to get their concepts into a finished shot!

Well done, everybody! I thought this week's challenge showed the highest standard of any so far -- which is really saying something, as it was a touch subject! :D

As for me, I had a hectic week, so I didn't get much time to spend on anything. I did get to visit some waterfalls for a couple of hours on Saturday (and, trust me, there was a LOT of water in motion after the recent rain we've had!). Even after that, it was a bit of a last minute thing: I finally got to download the photos from my camera around midnight Monday and had a quick, five-minute Photoshop session before bed.

The waterfall looked great - no need to "apologize" for it. In fact, one of my co-workers saw the photos and liked yours the best.

In fact, I certainly hope nobody feels slighted by my choices. Every one of them implied motion. But I really had to split hairs on this.

I enjoyed all the photos. And thanks to Stefan for runnin' the show this week.

Tough job well done, Stefan A, as every entry had a different interpretation of motion and all were good, so thanks for third place.

I was tempted to try an animated GIF since I couldn't see any rule against it and it would have *really* shown motion, but am now glad I didn't ;)

Thank you Stefan for choosing Screamin' for 1st place! :D
That was one of those shots where everything came together nicely. On that day I had taken a few other panning shots before hand and wasn't really satisfied with my results. So I made a few setting changes and then tried to be as smooth as possible following the bike as it exited Turn 9 at Portland International Raceway.
Congrats to Diminished29 and Teekay for their great takes on the Motion theme.

I also liked Simon's and Desi's shots as well. Simon, you should fly us all in for a photoshoot at that location...

I will get the next challenge up on the board tonight.

Oh, I wouldn't worry about that. Good hosting, and good judging, in my opinion. Thanks for doing a great job! :)

It certainly is a great spot! I just love the way you can see five or so "levels" of waterfalls back into the distance. :)

And, by the way, I loved the bike shot! I knew that was going to be hard to beat the moment I saw it. ;)

Hey everyone! A hearty congrats to all of the winners and everyone that entered.
I really liked the escalator shot and the one of the little race car on the wet pavement. The cones showing motion at perfect intervals was very attractive.
I really thought my idea was cool, and it probably was. I thought it would be fun to try something abstract, if that is what it is at all. I just need to learn how to take a photo.......lol
I'm learning, and enjoying the little contests each week. Congrats again to the chosen entries.

Hey sorry I haven't responded any in the past two weeks. My sister just had a baby a few days ago and thats been keeping me occupied. She's a sweetheart. I'll be starting a thread about her probably sometime later today so you guys can see her.

Stefan MUCH thanks for the 2nd place, that water picture took me a while to get since I don't have a tripod I had to use a very high shutter speed and pretty much just use trial and error.

Desi..what I did was a used a bowl, filled it near the top with water and put two of my fingers in there. I then focused, lifted my fingers and waited for the drop to come, and tried to time it right as it hit the water (easier said than done)

I had the zoom out all the way on these as well and used manual mode. Like I said though its MUCH easier if you have a tripod and a shutter release and what not and eye dropper, which is pretty much the setup that the DSLR guys use.

Again much thanks for all the compliments I'm glad you guys liked it. Dave congrats on 1st your picture was amazing as usual.
