Hi all,

Well I've been as busy as can be but wanted to stop in a put out a question and get some feedback.

I've been working on some photo DVD slideshows for some people and have run into the horrible problem of labeling the dvd's. People are wanting a full color picture, preferably one of the pictures from their dvd, on the dvd as a label.

Well from what I've read on the net, cd/dvd adhesive labels are a big no, no and from personal experience I can see why.

So further reading led me to the printers like the epson r200 which print on only "inkjet printable" dvd/cd. My problem here is if a drop of water or a small bit of moisture should get on these after they're printed, will the ink smear and what makes the dvd/cd inkjet printable ones different from one with a label stuck on it?

I know there are thermal printers out there but from what I've seen the affordable ones only print 1 color.

The dvd/cd marker wouldn't work as they are wanting full color pictures versus just written text.

I guess after all this rambling what I'm wondering is how everyone here handles labeling their dvd's/cd's for customers.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You need something like "Clear Acrylic Sealer". It's sprayable and dries almost instantly. But smells like..

I use lightscribe CD/DVD's.

I know it isn't color, but my clients will just have to deal with it :P

I use the Epson R200 to print all my CDs and DVDs. Epson's ink is not water soluble. In other words no, it will not smear. This is one sweet little printer for printing disks. Does an awesome job!

Lightscribe is okay, but is not color....yet. Color is coming soon. However, inkjet CDs and DVDs are available everywhere. Lightscribe's are a little harder to find and they're pricier.

I highly recommend the R200.

I think that once you factor in the cost of ink, lightscribe is probably cheaper...or at least closer to equal.

I know it isn't color. Nobody has really cared so far and they have liked the way I do em.

Nowadays almost any inkjet printer is capable of handling CD/DVD color printing (on printable support) with good to excellent results, altought not all of them hare handy and comfortable to to setup. My older Epson for example was really a pain in hte butt for printing on CDs. My 9950 (9900 in the US) does a perfect job and its VERY easy and comfortable to setup (just pull a lever, and insert the plastic tray with the CD on it in th appropriate slot. Everything else is done automatically. I love it :) Sometimes I print a CD just for the fun of it :)

I have got a Canon IP 4000 printer and that does CD/DVD printing and at this stage I haven’t had a single problem with any one of them. The software works well and it's simple. With the printer the cartridges are replaced and not the head that will keep the cost down. If you find the right disk then everything will be sweet. The only thing I will recommend and that is making sure you don't put any finger marks on the surface as may effect the final result. Such as a finger print.

I would recommend the print on disk method rather than the scribe method. it will look a lot more professional

Thanks so much for all the great responses....I'm thinking I'll sit back and wait on the lightscribe color....in the meantime I've purchased some dvd/cd markers and that'll have to do.
