Do you guys/gals ever use this lens as a replacement for the 24-70L on a "crop" body? Just curious. I'm gearless, but can still dream.

Had to sell it all cause we foreclosed on our house. We're renting now up north. I'm getting back to the point where I can buy again, but it's been a very, very slow process. It's a balance of getting hubby to agree and not wanting guilt over spending too much on gear.

Thanks. Yeah, pretty much stinks. It all came down to the PMI people who insure the bank. They tried to get $46,000 out of us in return for a short-sale (6 offers on the house, 2 cash - all rejected b/c the PMI-ers wouldn't okay it). So it's been pretty much a bummer all around.

Sorry to hear you still going through that mess Mum, has your hubby been able to find a job? It is scary out there...Sorry if you already mentioned this. I've haven't been around here, been in a sort of hiatus. LOL But the 16-35 is pretty much like you say a 24-70L (25.6 - 56). I've been using it as a walkabout lens since it is long enough to be one. The 17-85 is also getting some of that use, but the IQ is just not quite there for me.

Thanks for the positive thoughts. This economy is just plain scary right now. We've never been rich, or great about saving, but we were always able to buy luxury items now and again. This counting every penny stuff is pretty tough. Makes me feel for those who face a lifetime of it. I've been trying to find work after 5 years of being at home with the kids and, so far, it ain't happening. My husband's salary is better than when we were in NC, but our car insurance has doubled and we have oil heat. It is KILLING us. But we have no choice but to rent at the moment - our rent is nearly what our mortgage was down there for a much larger house. Sucks basically. I hope, for everyone, that things change in the not too distant future.

Is this lens as sharp as the 11-16 tokina 2.8 (on aps-c) in equivalency if it's used on a 5D mark II (full frame)?

Never, it is very easy for me to have that blue sky if it is blue without any filter, you have to learn how to meter your shot to get some colors great and vivid, and to be honest, i can't remember since 2007 is i used a CPL or not, but i remember i was walking around there with my camera and lens for first time in Scotland and say first day and i didn't take any filter that time walking i remember.

The 16-35 flares more than the Tokina. But the 11-16mm isn't really useful much below the 16mm range. Vignettes way too bad.

That will just get you the same old answer: "Depends on what you're looking for".
An extra stop of light is always good. Almost every photographer will shoot in low-light conditions at some point. The extra 1mm at the wide end and the extra 5mm of length are negligible. I would always choose an "L" lens over anything else.

+1... there are many considerations other than price--sharpness, contrast, size, weight, etc. For me, the 17-40 was perfect until I started shooting inside more without flash, and found that I was having to really push ISOs to get usable images. That extra stop, then, became a higher priority than size/weight/sharpness, etc.

Understood, then it is not the money issue only.
In this case i am happy with my choice, as i need low light cabapility, and weight is not an issue with me at all, sure i will see that 16-35 and 17-40 almost same weight or both are light to me after using 24-70 and 70-200 2.8IS and 300 all handholding.
About sharpness, i couldn't see any difference in sharpness between 16-35L and 17-40L on websites, unless i print shots from both lenses and check them side by side, or getting the original sizes shots taken by both lenses and compare both together, i don't take those websites test of lenses, i do trust myself tests and i heard that 16-35 is sharped in center but 17-40 is sharper in corners, what will happen if i crop then?

Really? I find the corners to be fairly soft wide open on the 16-35 mkI, but this doesn't really come as a surprise to me. The markII is supposed to have better corner sharpness.
It's pretty much a non-issue for me, but for some it might matter.

I said that 16-35 is sharp in center not corner, and 17-40 is sharper in corner than 16-35, read my post above again, and in fact i don't talk about wide open all the time.

Ah, gotcha. I would say that they are at least equal in center-sharpness, with maybe the 17-40 being slightly better. I don't have any side by side tests because they'd be boring, but I can say that the 16-35 is satisfactorily sharp for me, even wide open. However, my tolerance for sharpness may be a bit looser than others.

I love my 16-35L, i live now to see only sharp shots from all my lenses even wide open, i don't let them to have soft results wide open.

Having just also switched, it was 100% for the low light capability of the 2.8 -vs- 4.0. The 17-40mm is the better landscape lens IF you don't need/want 16mm. The soft corners are there, I did a very thorough lens test between the 17-40, 16-35 and 20-35 before committing. But once you're stopped down to ~f8 it's not an issue. That may seem a bit drastic, and it even LOOKS bad in test shots, but I think of it this way; anything I NEED sharp corners for, I'm on my tripod stopped down. So I'll have them. Anything I don't care about, I'll be hand held, but then I'll be closer to wide open. You only see the issue when you need the corner sharp, so if you're shooting wide open this is rarely the case.
Basically, using the lens how I normally will, it won't be an issue. And the soft corners blend right into the bokehed portions of a shot anyway.
As for the weight comment, I do care about both that and size. But not for hand holding issues, for me it's all about the weight of the entire kit I'm schlepping around or hiking with. So the weight is an issue since when I'm hiking I have my typical landscape kit, but in the end, owning just this -vs- the 20-35 and 17-40 won. Funny thing is though, last night I switched back to fast primes inside after a month or so of shooting just 2.8 zooms and was loving life again. If I stick with primes, the whole 2.8 issue is moot.
the other issue for me is the flare. But I didn't do a head to head flare test. I was noticing some at sunrise Saturday though. Not enough to ruin shots, but it did make me wonder if the 17-40 would in the same settings (I looked through it's shots from the previous 2 Saturdays and it didn't show ANY, but there was more cloud cover those days).
so far I'm happy with it. the 1mm on the wide end IS nice and IS different. But I'll also miss the 5 on the other end as 17-40 was a very good walk around range FOR ME.

well, I'll go out on a limb here and say neither is good/great on a crop body. It's not that they're bad particularly, it's that there are better crop specific alternatives. tamron and sigma and I think tokina make some really good lenses in this range for much less money. It's just that the 17-40 and 16-35 were both designed to cover a 35mm image, so they're much bigger and heavier and more expensive than what a crop body NEEDs.
What this does mean though is you're cherry picking the best part of their images. The only issue with the 16-35 is it's corners, and you'd be cropping those off in camera. The 17-40 typically has better sharpness for the entire frame, where the 16-35 is sharper in the center and worse in the corners. So if you need the stop and really want the L it's not a bad lens. But personally I'd save the money and go with a 3rd party option.
And yes, 16mm is a lot wider than 17mm on FF. On a cropper it's not quite as significant because 25.6 isn't AS big a difference from 27.2, but on FF it's certainly noticeable.
these are from a lens test I did, so nothing special but you can see the FL difference:

I was thinking of selling to get the Mk II but am wondering why bother, this lens on 5D2 is great :)

they will say it is better in sharpness in corners over the MK1 and also better to handle the flare, not sure what else.

If you can find a mk1 for a good price its the better choice. If you have a 5dii you can compose and just crop the corners off if needed with its resolution.

Heh! I'm sure you'll get a very wide variety of responses, and it could likely throw the thread way off-topic (pictures!)! Try doing a POTN search, enter the keywords "RAW jpeg" and have thread titles selected, and you will see more discussions about this than you would ever want to read:)!

I shoot RAW, only shooting JPEG if i am in so rush and hurry for someone to take the shot or if i filled my cards and external harddisks all with RAW and only very small amount of size about 20mb then i will change to JPEG and shoot few shots up to 20mb ;-)

I figured that much but thanks for the reply... the reason I'm asking is the colors are amazing on the shots that are posted and wanted to know if the OPs of these shots are using JPG or RAW as a starting point. That's all.

yeah, for the record, everything I've posted in here was shot as RAW + JPEG, but I only processed the JPEGs. ;)
both have their place, anyone who tells you you should only use one doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.....
Tareq

I use RAW, and i can use JPEG, i can get all the colors great with both, so you have to work with your exposure, getting so great colorful shots with bad exposure will do nothing, mostly colors can be corrected more than the exposure, and i believe that with right exposure and WB you can get great colors.

I'm happy to say that I'll be joining this thread soon.
I upgraded from a 40D with the Tamron 17-50 to the 1D MarkII and was sad that there was no equivalent to the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 in the price range that I was hoping for.
I found that it was either the 16-35L, 17-40L, or the 24-70L.
I shoot in a lot of low light situations, so immediately, the 17-40L was out.
The 24-70L is neither wide nor long on a 1.3x crop body for it's price tag to justify purchasing it.
So I went with the 16-35L (couldn't justify the mkII) and waiting for it to arrive.
All the photos in here look so promising, I can't wait to get my hands on mine!

No. If you find out it does, don't use it.
The only lens I've ever had flare/contrast issues with when using a good quality UV filter is my 135L. So, I don't use a filter on that lens.
No reason to freak out.

No reason to freak out.
unless by freak out you mean get excited because this lens rocks!!!!
oh, and here's the best sample/example of the soft corners I've come up with, watch this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDEjwRiTqOI
but remember, the video defaults to 2.8 in low light to keep the ISOs down and the shutter speed up (it NEEDs 1/30th or more). Also, here are the shots from that morning, no issues at all once you stop down:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=8144684&postcount=406
as I've said before (and Mark before me). The soft corners are there, but when you're shooting wide open generally that's bokeh'd out and not an issue. When you're stopping down it's not an issue either. It would only show up if for some reason you're "stuck" at a middle aperture which usually doesn't happen. At least not the way I shoot (Av at one end or the other).

;8650456']exactly what I said. Great shot! (was it done with a CPL?)
Thanks fellas for the comments... It wasn't a CPL, but two stacked filters: Cokin ND8 (3stop) and a hard edge 0.6 GND filter... The setup is similar below, but shot with a 1Ds2 (instead of the gripped 5D in the picture)... Labeled appropriately, of course:

I dropped the GND's horizon line just a bit lower than the landscape's horizon to get the added "dark" effect from the water... Looks like the ground underneath the water just drops several feet into the abyss... Hehhehehehe... Anyhoo, thanks for the comments...
