Anyone got any complaints about their 16-35 ? Some mindblowing shots in here with it, all I can see is good news

Nope! Wide open it does some weird stuff at the edges of the frame, but that stuff is almost always OOF so in practice it doesn't much matter.

I was worried that it wouldn't be as sharp as my 17-40 had been, but those fears haven't really played out at all.

I would say that, yes... personally, I wanted to stay standardized at a 77mm filter/cap/everything size, so that's why I went with the mkI (and because it's pretty good). That being said, the mkII is only a few hundred bucks more, and is sharper in the corners. Just depends on your priorities.

Tony,
Your waterfall picture is excellent. Why can't I come across scenes that look that unique!? lol

Aitbutchie,
Can you imagine how difficult it would be to keep those cars shiny and sparkling? Man, I guess if you're loaded enough to have someone shine it up for you, but who would have the time to keep up the look on those... sheesh. You used those focal lengths nicely to cover those cars. The 1st nicely accentuates the rims and the lights.

Thanks for the comment... There was actually several individuals walking around and cleaning the vehicles that were in their enclosed displays (like the three I posted)... They were all pretty incognito with their job... I would've never noticed them until they stepped into the display and did a quick wipedown of the car... They were done in less than a minute or two... In any event, they did a fantastic job in making the vehicles crisp, clean, and vivid (as you can see with what I captured)... Anyhoo, thanks for the comment...

how do you like the 16-35 on the 1dmkiii?

It is wide enough for me, many times these days or in travel i use my 24-70 or 24-105 on my FF bodies, so that 16-35 will be wide enough on my 1DIII or any 1.3x body, and it is up to you if want to have 16mm or 17mm true, so they use this lens or 17-40 on FF.

In what way? We'd get sued if we didn't clear the parking lot (when someone slipped and broke something), precisely because we don't get a lot of snow here--there's no "that's just the way it is" sort of mentality down here.

When it snows, even a little, things shut down here... and I know how it is on the flip-side--I just got back from driving up to Crater Lake in fairly heavy snow. There's just a totally different set of expectations when there's any snowfall in a place that doesn't normally see it in any significant amount.

Stupid, misguided, annoying, whatever you want to call it, it is what it is.

I gotta say... I rented the Mk II about 2 months ago for a weekend, to test out the focal range.

About a week later i bought the original Mk I to save some money, and i haven't noticed any major differences other than that my other lens filters still fit this one! Great lens and i personally can't understand why anyone would pass on it.

My standard walk around set-up is 1Dmk2+16-35 and 1Dmk2+70-200. My other lenses just set in the case most of the time.

Hello! Im looking to get this(mk1) for my 7D...Do you think this would be ok for a 1.6x? I would love to get the 17-55...but it has no weather sealing...Im not the softest with my lenses...they go into the rain with me and this will be going hiking and on the beach quite often and i feel that the 17-55 wouldnt be up to snuff(as well as all of the 3rd party lenses)...I need 2.8 for low light...so the 17-40 is out of the question. So this seem to be the only option for me. MK2 is supposed to be better in the corners, But with the 7D I wont see that bad part of it.

Ive found one for 875 with uv filter(and everything it came with). Do you think thats an ok price?

Also....Do you think that the 17-55's/24L's hood would fit it(to try to help with flare)? I know they fit the 17-40 and help out a bit more(on a cropped sensor!)!

Also....Do you think that the 17-55's/24L's hood would fit it(to try to help with flare)? I know they fit the 17-40 and help out a bit more(on a cropped sensor!)!

I'd stick with the 17-55. You're paying way too much for the 16-35 if you're going to be using it on a crop body as a general walk-around. The 17-55 gets a lot of crap because of the build, but it's still built tough (provided you put a UV filter so dust doesn't get through the front end). It'll be fine in light/moderate rain and sand/dust won't be much of an issue either.

Why give up 20mm on the long end, IS, AND pay more? Also, the 17-55 will give you better IQ. Long story short, get the EF-S and take care of your equipment better.

Have you considered Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8? I know it's not weather sealed, but it's so much cheaper.

Pay more for the 16-35????? 17-55s usually go for 800-900...They are not a cheap lenses...I believe they should have been built better, another story though.

I did buy the 16-35, everything is great! Its in perfect condition, focuses square on and rivals my 70-200 in sharpness wide open at 2.8.

Now about me taking care of my equipment....now me looking for a weather sealed lens...that's me taking care of my equipment! I had my sony a300 on the beach once here in oregon barely used it(cause it was so windy) and still got stuff all on my sensor! Granted, it can be cleaned...do I want to clean it?? NO.

I take great care of my stuff! But if I want to take a picture during a dust storm out on the dunes of four wheelers or during a gorgous storm on the beach...my camera need to be able to handle it. If I can't handle the weather, neither can my camera. I do still put a rain coat on my gear and everything...I'm not stupid. I just want to take pictures. I feel the 7D is up to it...just have to gear it up right.

Thanks for the advice though. But I did take the take care of your equipment kind of personal.

Hell I'm excited about my new lens! The distortion makes it fun as well! The hood is useless though! Hahahaha! But you are correct about the 20 extra mm...just have to move in closer...I could always use my 24-70 instead =). IS would be great as well just going to have to have steady hands...

I'm surprised you all were against me on buying this lens...its crazy! =)

Good you go with 16-35L, it is my best landscape lens, if i want a bit longer then 24-70 and 24-105 are always ready, also i am so lucky i didn't went with 17-55 because i upgraded to 3 full frame and 2 1.3x crop bodies.

I just sold the 17-40 and picked up this lens from a friend who upgraded to the MKII version.

Looking forward to use this on the 1ds2 and contribute to the thread... :)

Allright AB, now it's on! I got my 16-35 today! Tomorrow night, Wisconsin State Fair, tripod, 16-35, 1Ds II and the MIDWAY! I got the same equipment, now I just need to get out and shoot! I love these shots. I'm kinda awed that I actually have the same equipment that this was shot on. Looking forward to posting here...

I've had this lens for years and It's probably one of my most used but I never post on here haha! I never upgraded to the mkII, didn't see a reason to.

I'll try to get some things in here soon.

I've seen them as low as $800, which pains me because I bought mine new in '06 for $1400 lol. Turns out it was right before the mkII version as well.

I still see no reason to get rid of this lens. It's always been good to me.
