I'm considering either a Tamron 17-50 or a Canon lens. How do you guys think this lens would do for a crop? I basically want a much wider angle than what my 50mm offers. I shoot mostly sports.

How wide do you want to go, if ultra wide then 10-22/10-20 will be better for you.
And about crop, did you think about 17-55 as well? there is 17-40 as cheaper alternative to 16-35 but same quality or even almost slightly better from some people here saying that, but 17-55 for only crop bodies is no brainer.

So how would you compare the 17-50 Tamron to the 17-40 Canon and this lens? I think 17mm is a pretty decent angle on a crop after checking out some sample pics.

I forgot, but i think they will tell you that with mk2 you will get sharper corners, even they will say it is slightly sharper overall, and i think it is better with flare but not sure, and maybe it is better with CA, something else i don't know.

I am also considering this lens on 50d and I am sure the quality will be OK since
the main complain for this version is corner softness on FF. My concern is how
wide are these 16mm on crop. I had for some time 17-40mm, very good lens but
apart from been f/4 @17mm the field of view was the same as my EF-S 18-55@18mm.
There was not even 1 cm more in the frame then the EF-S 18-55@18mm.
Comments from people shooting crop will be appreciated.

I finally got one used in good condition. So some initial impressions for
people planing to use it on crop sensor as wide to normal lens.
Physically it is similar to 17-40, but still I think it balances better on 50d.
In low light auto focus is faster then 17-40, no hunting at all. I am
still not sure about the focus accuracy compared to 17-40. I had better
keeper rate with the 17-40, but I am not sure if the reason is the AF of
the lens or the smaller DoF at f/2.8. Actually when I am close to the subject
keeper rate is good, the problem is when I am more then 1,5m away and
the subject is smaller part of the frame. Then some times it produces not
very sharp images, of course that is at f/2.8 in low light. But when it nails the
focus, the sharpness is excellent. I suspect that since this is UWA for FF,
where you have more DoF at the same FL and same subject distance
this focus error falls into the DoF tolerance and is just not visible on FF.
Otherwise the range on crop is good, at least for my taste. The 1mm at the wide
end is actually very useful and I do not miss the extra 5mm at the long end.

Thanks!
When the mkII was first released I tested a couple copies out and they both were no better and possibly worse than my mkI. I've heard that as time progressed they figured it out and tweaked the lens making it much better overall. I've not tried another copy to confirm this.
Honestly, if you found a killer deal on the mkII I'd go for it, if not then save your money and buy the mkI.
It's a good lens, but not a GREAT lens. I keep it around because it allows me to shoot wider than any of my other lenses.

I've been looking (i.e. comparing) photographs in the "lens sample images" forum taken with both versions of the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L lenses (Versions 1 & II) and in all honesty can't see much if ANY difference between the two.
Maybe it's my monitor, maybe it's my eyes, but honestly I can't see what all the hullabaloo is about the Mk II version being "so much better".
I've especially looked at nature/scenic photos, such as those shot by AirButchie with his Mk 1 version, and to me they're simply breathtaking.
Perhaps the Mk II version is "sharper" in the corners (using a microscope to see any difference), but just looking at the images in this forum, both lenses seem to produce outstanding images. Great sharpness, brilliant colour, and several are frame worthy. (IMHO)
Also the Mk I version has a smaller front element which makes using filters much more easy and convenient.
agphotography
12th of January 2011 (Wed), 13:20
Well on web-sized images you would never be able to tell a difference, and if that's the only place your images are going then there's really no reason to get the mkII. As far as I understand the later copies of the mkII are better (not by a huge margin, but still.) and one would really only see the difference in large prints.
One thing that I never liked about this lens is that if I'm shooting really wide but at a distance, small details just sort of become a blur. It's great close up, but at a good working distance I can't seem to maintain detail in smaller subjects. Possibly just a limitation of UWA, I'm not really sure.
Another thing I've started to notice is that when I'm using Live view and manual focus at 10x magnification (on a tripod of course) the image will "shift" (for lack of a better word) while trying to focus. It's almost like the lens elements move slightly. Really weird. I mean it still works, and the AF seems to be accurate still, but I just thought that was kind of odd. I've only noticed it in Live View though.
Canonswhitelensesrule
12th of January 2011 (Wed), 13:45
Thanks agphotography.
I guess it really wasn't fair of me to compare the differences using only web-sized images, but it's hard to find large prints from each lens to compare.
My main reason for possibly choosing the Mk I version over the Mk II is both price and the filter size.
I shoot mainly nature/wildlife, and produce up to 30" x 40" enlargements (or larger at times) so the best quality would obviously be my choice.
I mean sure, I'd love to get a Samyang/Rokinon etc 14mm f/2.8, and a Zeiss 21mm f/2.8 lenses, and hopefully one day I will. But the 16-35mm isn't too shabby in itself, is more convenient, has AF, so I just have to figure out which is the best version for me.
agphotography
12th of January 2011 (Wed), 15:35
Perhaps if you could rent or borrow one from a friend.
Honestly though I've done large prints from my mkI and I'm still happy with it. I had mine calibrated by Canon early on because out of the box it was not working, but once it came back it was pretty solid. I've shot thousands of frames with this lens over the years and it still has a home in my camera bag ;)
I'm sure the mkII is better somehow, but I've yet to be convinced that it's worth trading up. It's not as noticeable of an improvement compared to say the 24L and the 24LII (THAT was a noticeable improvement, I've owned both versions)
Canonswhitelensesrule
12th of January 2011 (Wed), 16:00
Thanks again for the feedback, agphotography. Very much appreciated and useful. Heck I've taken photos with my Canon EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom lens on Velvia film and enlarged them to 16x24 with no complaints from purchasers. So I guess the Mk I version of the 16-35 shouldn't be any slouch.
agphotography
12th of January 2011 (Wed), 16:53
I'd say pick up a good used copy and then with the extra money you would have had to spend to get a mkII version you could buy a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 ;)

I took my lens in the other day. Still waiting for it to be finished. Hopefully before my trip! Still cost me $110 just to have it checked out. Ouch! I wish the CPS discount was higher lol.

Well I just got it back today and they did find something wrong with the AF so I guess I wasn't crazy after all!
I'll have to do some real testing to see if it's actually better in use, as it's been raining all day and I didn't have a chance to go shoot.

my main concern now is this: I received this 16-35 as a present when i actually requested the 10-20, person who bought it decided to surprise me even more by spending way more and buying the 16-35L. However my camera is a cropped 450D (xsi rebel).
I really am stuck.. the pics im taking with it seem to be beautiful, lens itself is super fast, sharp as a knife and just performs beautifully. On the other hand I noticed many users of this lens own a FF camera so Idk whether to exchange it for the 10-20 more suitable for my camera or just hold onto this even though its on a cropped body (still looks wide although i know it breaks it down alittle on the crop) and wait til i eventually upgrade to a 5d2 which i want one day.
also i have seen 7d users (mind you the 7d is not full frame either) with this lens so im lost here alittle . Im still a beginner in all of this so please help anyone.!
i only saw one pic in archive with a 30d using the 16-35 which justifies the wide angle on the same crop cam but if anyone has anything to offer on this subject please chime in! thanks

I mostly shoot people and my old camera is not really good at high ISO, so it is kinda important on one hand but on the other hand I won't need this lens to be 2.8 for RE and Landscapes...

If you can afford the $300, go for the 16-35 and appreciate the extra stop of light it gives ;)

They are nice shots indeed.
I can't talk about him, but i am sure he used ND filters with higher stops [maybe 5 stops or 9 or even 10], with those exposure and the speed moving of clouds i can get same effect from 10 sec up to 3-6 minutes, longer will get stronger effect of clouds, you have to experiment, buy one of those filters and go out and have fun.

It's always fun to kill some time on a pretty afternoon at the skatepark. It's also nice to use some of the bells and whistles of the 1DmkIII. Isaac came with me and after watching the guys skate for a bit, said, "I want to do that!"
Unfortunately, none of the skaters were really that good (and no one was skating the bowl), but I still think I got some ok shots.

Once you will use filters you will have a lot of fun and creative shots, just study filters better and watch your exposure and you will have winner shots.
Good luck!

For the long exposures: its, indeed, a 10 stops ND filter from B+W. Exposures are from 1 to 2mn.

You'd likely be happier with a 11-16 or 10-20 for the T2i, if it's the really UWA field of view you're looking for.

great pictures. I have been looking into buying this lens for my t2i.
I think this UWA would be more logical for a full frame camera. on T2i, it would merely be something around 25-60mm equivalent. You might as well get 17-55 F/2.8 IS EF-S, at least it is cheaper.
