I have one. It's a sweet lens. 16mm on a crop body is fairly wide (FoV 25.6mm equiv). Until I picked up this lens, the widest I had was a 28mm (FoV 44.8mm equiv) so it was quite a welcome change. IQ is very good.

Would you consider this a good lens for walking around at night?

Can't say enough good things about this lens. Most people who need WA won't fork up the cash for it when there's a much cheaper 17-40L, EF-S 10-22 for crop bodies and other third party alternatives available. Most people simply don't need a fast WA zoom. Probably the main reason for the lack of reviews. You'll see this lens used by a lot of professionals and it gets the job done. Those that purchased this lens and expect it to make pancakes for them in the morning are usually the ones posting negative reviews about it. All the negative things people whine about are usually things that are inherent in the design of the lens. I, for one, am not disappointed. It has performed well for me in less than adequate lighting conditions indoors, the primary reason I swapped my 17-40L for the 16-35L in the first place. It's performs like a mid-range zoom on a crop body and is very versatile in the right hands. Not to mention it's great for landscapes and scenery. BTW, I recently posted some scenic shots taken with the 16-35L mounted on my 5D. You should be able to find the link easily if you use the search function. For night shots, I typical resort to my faster primes like my 35L. Keep in mind that every piece of equipment has its pros and cons. Understanding and accepting the capabilities and limitations of your equipment before hand can save you misery later. ;)

EDIT: No need to search. Here you go: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/373835 ;)

I would think you dont hear much about it because of it's little brother.

The 17-40 f/4 is a great lens that MANY people own, they own it for a reason (i love mine). The 16-35 is at least as sharp and a full stop faster.

I think, eventually, i will replace my 17-40 with my 16-35, but at this point in my photography, at 16/17mm, the extra stop of light is just not all that much of a deal to me and i simply cant justify the (nearly) double cost.

Keep in mind, in most situations, there is a much bigger difference between say a 300mm f/4 and a 300mm f/2.8 then a 16mm f/2.8 and a 17mm f/4 simply because you need much higher shutter speeds for pictures used with these lenses then the wide angles.

Alas, and i'll end with this, photography is all about capturing the light...anyone who doesnt want to be able to capture more is a fool :)

Specialhawk: No, I did not use a graduated ND filter...just my polarizer. The shot was taken at about 9:30 AM. This effect is not uncommon on my Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM when using a circular polarizer with it. What helped this image was the fact that the sun was low in the sky and I was looking up the side of a hill when I took the photogarph, which I think gave me a good 90 degree angle to the sun, thus allowing perfect colorization of the sky.

I'm not too far behind you at all, Dante, and I'm 21! More than half of mine is gone....such a bummer.

Anyway, back on topic, that was a lovely shot of your family, bub. Very colorful. I see some wonderful saturation from that lens, but from the people that have the shots with lovely color in them, I'm beginning to think that some of it is PS skill as well. Being a PS newbie can ruin a great shot, I think.

Actually, the 16-35 isn't the best lens in my bag, but it's the best ultra-wide lens I have owned (except for the fisheye). I've tried 3 different 20 mm primes and the 17-40 and my 16-35 is the best of them. It's a keeper...

Exactly. Apples to apples - it's the best wide-angle ZOOM Canon can offer.
However, one can't even start comparing it on an equal-focal-length basis to any other lens. It is worse.

Makes perfect sense... Ultra wide angles are harder to make well than a standard or even a regular wide angle lens - let alone a zoom and at a bright aperture.

All things considered, I wouldn't trade my 16-35mm for anything. Maybe some fast primes, but they each have their uses. In any event, it doesn't change my opinion of the 16-35mm one bit. I like it.

Me too...
With this lens - I don't look for ultra resolute images at crop 100%.
There are other features to the 16-35 : View Angle, Versatility, Light Weight, Contrast, Colors, and a moderate CA for its class.

It is an awesome lens, but be aware, it will distort in some instances...I had that issue at Colchester Castle, England in '03. I don't have that pic readily availiable. The OS on that computer is toast...it's a win xp based computer and that's all I am gonna say on that. This computer is a Mac and works flawlessly! Ahh...Macs! Ok, back to that...
the 16-35 was the 2nd lens purchased after the 120-300. I did a comparison of a crappy lens and the 24-70 and it rocked the crap lens. The 16-35 rocks! I have pics to show upon request...these are early work, though...like Oct, 03.

Well as some of you know I decided on this lense in May prior to a trip to Korea. Well I've just returned and thought I would add to this thread... Here are my thoughts on this lense....
1. This was my first "L" lense and my first impression of course is build quality...it's a tank.
2. Being a prime fan I was quite surprise by the sharpness of this lense...it's incredible for a zoom...
3. I debated over this lense and the 17-40...was it worth the extra bones...in my opinion yes it was. The extra stop is wonderful.
4. I think this is a great, fantastic compliment to any kit.
5. Some samples....Not the best images out there, but I am an amatuer.

Thanks for any comments and all of the advice that everyone gave me prior to me making the purchase....
All images hand held....available light...Exif embedded....IQ lowered for resize purposes..

I shot some pictures with this lens on my 5d. The images posted in this thread do not have distortion. Are those cropped or on crop frames? I admit I shot with f2.8, is this the reason? I admit I am somewhat disappointed in this lens, but am not planning to sell or trade...will give it more time.

Also, I am going to New Zealand with this lens and have decided I need some GND filters. I want a Lee setup. Which wide angle adapter do I purchase?

For me, lens flare is not necessarily a bad thing in some cases. Though flare seems to be pretty well controlled in image #4 of TK's last group, I think the flare actually adds character to this shot.

BTW, great work TK! I'm really digging your stuff. You too Nick. ;)

Considering where you are in relation to the sun, I would say this is normal. The 16-35L is prone to flare, but if you're creative you can use that to your advantage. ;)

Some may be due to PP, some the lens... But typically, a prime will outperform a zoom.

According to Canon, the edge sharpness was enhanced. This is mostly for the FF shooters, but even the croppers gain a little. Worth the upgrade? If you shoot with a crop camera, probably not. One more thing to consider is the new 82mm filter size, whereas the original had 77mm. You'll need to purchase new filters - and at the 82mm size, they're quite pricey.

Edge/corner sharpness is definately improved on the Mk II, flare is significantly reduced, barrel distortion at 16 mm is less on the new lens, and CA in the corners is cut. Definately an improvement for full-framers, especially if you're going to frequently shoot at f/8 or faster, or if you want to shoot architecture.

Hmmm...my impression from my readings is that while the improvement is there, it isn't anything "earth shattering"...

I loved the 16-35 Mk I - the best ultra-wide I had found until now. But the Mk II is better. At wide apertures, the Mk II is impressively better, particularly at the wide end (16-24 mm or so) and especially towards the edges and corners. At f/11, they are roughly equal in terms of sharpness.

As to flare, the Mk II is definately much better. I have yet to induce the type of flare in the Mk II that the Mk I occasionally gave me.

Double Negative

With such a wide angle as the 16-35mm provides, flare is no surprise. Glad to hear that this was addressed in the Mk II version. My solution? Just hold a hand out in the periperhery of the lens to block the light causing the flare... Not elegant, but hey, it solves the problem. :)

A couple of mk1 photos from today (both 5-image-HDRs, 1d2, CS2-spawned-false-blur/vignetting-of-edge). The one thing that just absolutely stuns me about this lens is its rich color rendition. RAWs converted with no modification look like JPEGs with +2 saturation!
