View Full Version : Loch Voil and THE TREE

Hi everyone
One part of Loch (lake) Voil, can`t remember where exactly.
The day started perfect,a bit of mist in the early morning but when it cleared up there was not a single cloud in the sky, perfect.
After 3pm though it was another story,as you can see the sky turned grey,no wind at all though, which was ideal for great reflections.
As you can see the bottom of the loch is covered with leafs.
Reflections...yes , blue sky...no!:lol::lol:
The second one is the famous tree for which a few people here (including myself) are claiming the copywrite.:D:D:D:D:D:D
Taken the 14-01-2006 with canon 1DmkII n & Tamron 17-35 with Lee filters.

************************************************** ************************************************** ***********************
This tree is right on the top of a tiny rocky island and quite a few of its roots are external, eventually it will split the rock in two,if it hasn`t already done so,amazing how they grow up there.

I'll second that!.... I have several "still water" lake's and reservoirs near where I live and have only once come across water so still!!!
Once again great pics Dimitri. You certainly inspire me to get out there and try my best!

We've all experienced the overcast skies, but the calm waters - they're as common as unicorns in any of my shots. :)
I like the first one for the reflections and interesting foreground colours and textures. Our tree is still going strong in the second one I see. ;)

Beautiful, Dimitri, just beautiful.
This might sound a bit pedantic but I would be tempted to clone out the branches of the tree coming in from the left of the frame in the second shot.
But that's just me. :?
I have to get up there and stake a claim on this tree.

Fantastic shots as usual Dimitri, I love the huge depth you have achieved in the first one, sharp focus from the bush in the foreground all the way back to the horizon Nicely done. The reflections are superb.

You guys are lucky I don't live in Scotland. I'd hide behind a tree and then chuck and handful of rocks into the water to upset that PERFECT glass-smooth surface! http://bestsmileys.com/evil/3.gif

How do you ALWAYS find the water so calm dimitri. nice shots as expected.
Well,it depends AL,when the weather is to be really good and calm i go for lochs,if its to be a bit windy i go for falls/rivers/mountains and if its not that great i go for animals/birds.
Add to that a bit of luck also and you have a great combo.
Ofcourse it does,`t always turn to be as i want it, for instance,i haven`t had a clear day for awhile now.:(
I'll second that!.... I have several "still water" lake's and reservoirs near where I live and have only once come across water so still!!!

Check the above reply, and thank you for the kind comments.
ps...i also try early in the morning as it tends to be quite calm.

You are absolutelly right about the branches Cameron,i should clone them out,i think its me being lazy, .
Not very happy withe 2nd shot and my excuse is...it was the last thing i shot that day (a long shooting day, plenty of keepers) and i was getting tired, plus i couldn`t get the tripod to stay in portrait orientation for the shot and i was getting a bit frustated.
Thats my excuse and i`m sticking to it.
Hi Dimitri,

Graham
No Graham,it wasn`t,thats what i tried to explaing further up,not always as we want it so we need to get the best of it while we can.

   thanks JT,nice one.
Funny enough,i was trying to take a shot of loch Venahar and there was 2-3 guys there throwing stones in the water to make ripples, the water was just perfect.
Very kindly i asked them if they could stop it for a few minutes so i could take a couple of shots and fair enough, the guys were brand new.
and then all the scots would tie you up to the tree and take a picture of it..

Thanks for the reply,i used Lee nd grad 3 stops (and still there was a bit of the sky overexposed a touch) and the Lee CP.
Isn't it ever windy when you go out Dimitri? Great shots as usual.
Well Damian, its been really bad for the last (at least) 4 weeks, not pictures taken at all.
It wasn`t even good weather for the zoo or anywhere else.
I`m talking about the weekends obviously.
Thanks for kind words.:)

Dimitri - do you think a 4 stop grad would have done a better job or perhaps too much?

Dimitri - do you think a 4 stop grad would have done a better job or perhaps too much?
Yes Rick it would, the problem is that with the current comp.the mountain on the left would come out far too dark.
It already was a bit dark and i had to bring it up.
We cann`t have everything in this life you see.

Superb! No blue sky but with a capture of this quality it doesn't matter, the clouds add interest and detail to the smooth surface of the water. I really like the bare trees leaning over the water also the plant on the right (heather?) in the foreground looks as if it will be blooming soon. KC
