FYI:
There's a nice review of the technique of fill flash photograpy in the September issue of Popular Photography. It wasn't overly detailed, but explains what you're trying to accomplish and how to go about it. I particularly like the analogy to taking two pictures at once. One of the background who's exposure is set by the aperture and shutter speed, and one of the foreground subject, who's exposure is set by using flash compensation in TTL mode.

Yes, it is an on-line publication at http://www.popphoto.com/. The article on fill flash, however, is not yet available

Popular Photography is a magazine that is available on news stands, by subscription, and on line. I don't know if every article is available on line. The September online edition is not available yet.

Scott's right it is a great article, that was the only one that I cut out of the publication to keep in my scapbook. It's worth buying and reading multiple times.

In ETTL, the camera reads and exposes for the ambient while the flash reading is taken off from the subject or from the active focusing point.

the advantage of digital in flash photography is one can see immediately the result, so u can adjust your flash output accordingly.

When using fill flash, it's often better to switch the flash unit to just TTL (not propietary ETTL or Nikon's Matrix balanced fill flash), and manually adjust the flash exposure compensation down. This way you make the decisions without wondering what the camera is doing.
