Today I picked up my new lens a Sigma 135-400 APO and did some testing with it :D.
Without a 2x convertor everything is rather controllable (I have VERY steady hands), but with the 2x convertor it's even on a tripod very hard to get it COMPLETLY still, offcourse it's a 400x2=800x1.6=1280mm lens :D.
so I need a remote and to use mirror lockup, can I just buy any remote or do I have to watch certain things, I rather spend a bit more and do it right.
Greetings,
Frank

You're in luck. The canon remote is pretty expensive :)

If you have a radio slave you can buy a cord to fit the 10d. I believe I got mine from B&H. Im sure they make cords to fit other remotes as well.

While waiting for your remote, you can use the self timer, if you have the patience.

Use self timer with mirror lockup and you need less patience.
With that when you trip the shutter the mirror locks up then 3 seconds later the shutter fires. Quite a handy tool - unless yu are tracking wildlife :)

Wildlife :D indeed.
The selfmade remote is not really my deal, for the € 50,00 I can better buy the original, but I saw there are a few options like infrared etc. but to be honest I think the normal one is more than enough. The question was more posted in the way like am I missing out anything with the cheapest, does it focus for example ?

The RS-80N3 has two functions: half press, and full press. So yes you can focus using the half press and then trip the shutter or hold it down.

Frank,
What tripod and head are you using? It sounds like to me you have a problem with the setup other than remote.

Hi,
a manfretto tripod with a #200 head, I bought this from a friend of mine recently.
The tripod is rock solid, but at the maximum zoom you just see some very slight movement when I touch the camera.
I think at that kind of range it would be rather normal ?

I use Gitzo Explorer G2220 (which is not that sturdy) with Acratech ballhead with Wimberely Sidekick on my EF100-400mm L IS USM. When I secure all the knobs with tripod legs fully extended, no movement at all.
Could it be the lens weight exceeding the capacity of the head?

Hi,
Griffin, I have no problem on the 400 end, I shoot that from hand if necessary, I run into problems when I connect my 2x convertor :D. Making the total a 1280mm lens.

I did ordered the LC4 and tried it out, however I returned the unit because for some reason did not work properly on the camera.
I use Leica R glass with the body, lens set in the manual mode, I set the apature press the exposure botton on the camera, bingo exposing as as it should be. Doing the same but using the LC4 unit the camera expose too dark by 1 stop, consistently!
I am awating for remote switch and will try again using the remote mode. The focal length of the lens is 560mm what is close to 900 mm on this body and hope the switch will do its job.

The problem I posted before is solved, by Me!
This exposure problem I did discussed with Canon Tech Service, and his answer was "I have no clue why this is happening." Well, so much for Canon Tech Service.
The answer is in the 10D Instruction Manual on pg. 78 and you should follow those instruction.
Stray light will influence the light meter to 1-3 stops.
