Flash for S30, what settings

Hi everyone. Lately, I've had the need to soften my lighting a bit when taking pictures. I bought a Vivitar 245 flash with slave and light diffuser but have not noticed a difference in my pictures. Is there any way I can get my S30 to "see" the softer lighting? Sorry if this is an easy one but I'm a newbie and the Canon technician had no clue. Thanks.

I think slave flashes don't work with S30.

S30 sends a small pre flash before fireing the main flash, and this pre flash causes the slave to set off.
