Let me know what could be improved. This was a first attempt at this, made a duplicate layer and just earased part of image to reveal the color image underneath.

Very well done for a first attempt.
An 'alternative' (and 'better') way of doing that, is to make a second layer like you did - and then put a LAYER MASK on - that way, you can pick and fiddle and add bits, without accidentally deleting bits.
I'd love to see this, with everything greyscale - EXCEPT the TREES and the WATER and maybe the bluesky bit?

Not trolling, but... can't help to ask, why do you want to make a BW+color photo anyway? To me, it's too pushy, it forces me to look at the color part and I don't like to be forced. Just saying...

Photographers push the viewer to look at certain aspects of a photo all the time. Though the use of lighting, focus, perspective, depth of field. Do you object to that too?

Nay, but such an effect I find too... sorry, but, cheap... in my opinion.
