The 10D manual says that you use a plain white paper to set custom WB.

I know some people uses the gray card to set it instead.

Which is better?

Isn't it easy to test by your self ?

when I shoot hockey I use the empty ice for a custom white balance. I would think a grey card is the best. I belive that it is 15% off pure white and that is the standard. also use the pre sets if it's cloudy use that if it sunny use that and shoot it a +/- setting at 1/2 stop It is always better to under expose a little and then you have a little play to bright and sharpen your phots after the fact. the one thing you don't want is to over expose and wash out your pictures

I never had much luck with the custom white balance. I was continually ending up with a hue that I always had to correct.

I switched back AWB and haven't had any problems at all. I figured if I was going to have to edit in any event I may as well take what the camera was offering. I shoot exclusively in RAW which allows for greater latitude than JPEG.
