Hi I was suppost to visit china but for expense reasons can not make it. I was trying to tag along with my friend for a full week business trip but her company is making one unexpected stop to an island so it just made my round trip cost almost double  . She is willing to pick up a 30D for me over their but im trying to see if it would be any cheaper. What should I expect her to see over there in terms of pricing. Ive asked this in another local forum but I was told to negotiate and I should be able to get a good price (that didnt help much). so if anyone has any tips I would appreciate it.

Thanks

I hope she can tell the real thing from the fake. I hear my nasty shops exist over there. Just imagine paying for a 30D only to get a used 20D. I hear HK is the place to pick p cheap Photo equipment but that was years ago. Now the oly place tha are reputable are just as expensive as state side. Besides Canon USA may or may not honor your warranty. So what would you be saving?

Thanks for the info. I was just thinking since she was out there maybe save a few bucks but I guess it might not be worth it. Thanks

If I recall (and I haven't ridden VTA Light Rail in a loooooong time), I think you're talking about one on or around North First St. in San Jose? Not very far from Cisco Systems, etc.?

Demo, FWIW - as long as your friend is a good negotiator, and knows exactly what she is looking for, you can actually save a bundle. Give her the prices Stateside and expect to get a few hundred off, maybe enough for a 580EX or 430EX if she haggles well. She should ask for an international warranty, and make sure that she has all of the accessories when the package is given to her. She shouldn't feel like she is insulting them (the seller) if she checks.

Most stores also have a superstition -- that if the first person in the store doesn't buy anything, the whole day will be bad... I've used this to my advantage when buying electronic stuff in HK or Singapore. An example would be my old film Canon SLR which I got for 40% off of what I could get back home.

At the end of the day, as long as you do your homework and know your numbers, you have everything to gain, and nothing to lose in countries like China/HK/Singapore.

Good luck!

My brother-inlaw who works in Singapore and travels frequently to Japan and HK. Brought his and his co-worker Cams here from B&H. He told me that the prices here in NYC is better then those in HK and Japan. It might be a big saving for those outside of USA, but here it seems the price is much better and a USA warranty to boot. International warranty may or may not work in the USA. I believe that the international warranty is honor only at internation service centers and not USA service centers. For example at Costco.com they have the 20D w/ kit lens for under $1200.00.

1200 is a good price but that lens I see go for on average 50- 60 bucks. If I could go with a 30D for about what a new 20D go for out here its worth it. Im just going to see what she can do, if its not much cheaper then ill pick one up here so it wont hurt to try. and thanks for your input Lostdoggy.
