View Full Version : Better Zoom Browser.

I contacted Canon Australia and was sent to a download address and I now have Z/B Version 3.1 instead of my old 2.2. It has a few different options but generally works the same. In my last post, I really wanted to get rid of it because of it's 'crashability', and I have had a play around with Breese Browser, but I still Z/B is an excellent program especially if this version has fixed the crash bug in it. Time will tell !

NOTE FROM PEKKA:

I'm sorry but I had to remove this link because these programs are copyright protected and the link is not from any Canon's IP:s.

Of course you can exchange this kind of info freely in personal email, but on this forum I must forbid any "warez" kind of activity. I'm sure you understand.
END OF NOTE

Good luck ...... Mick.

The Canon helpdesk told me that a Zoombrowser cannot be downloaded, but that it's legal te copy a CD.
So I think this should be no problem?

I have a A50 and ZB 1.1, but recently got a new XP machine, which won't run ZB 1.1. How did you get Canon to respond with a URL? I'm hoping to get the latest version and have it update my > 500 image ZB database.

Legally I don't know where we stand, but I simply phoned the Australian Canon Office in Sydney and asked if there was some way to overcome ZBs problems, and was given the URL to get the newer version (3.1) . I haven't had any problems since ..... touch wood .

I don't understand why Canon isn't more helpful with Zoombrowszer problems.
Currently I want to email my photos through a different "server" than Outlook Express,
but I can't find online help with this anywhere. What is the big secret?
I too would like to know the site to download a newer version, if you don't mind another
request. Again though, why doesn't Canon advertise this???
At least you have taken the time to help others - thanks............j

I have had lots of requests for this newer version (3.1) and have sent them privately, but the last time I sent it the receiver had problems in that the site would not open. I tried the address I had sent and found the same problem, so I'm sorry , but I guess Canon have closed it down ............ no more upgrades !

I'm from Colombia, South America. I bought a Canon Power Shot S-110 at amazon.com. I didn't receive the software with the camera and Canon says they can not ship the CD to Colombia. I'm using PhotoStudio 2000 (it was provided with HP scanner) to download the pictures but it doesn't work for the videos.
Anyone has used a different software to download the video from the camera (not zoombrowser)?.
If you know an URL to download Zoombrowser let me know too.
Thanks.

It's worth having a look at breezebrowser - I've been quite happy with zoombrowser, but breezebrowser has some very nice features - and the breeze downloader is ridiculously quicker than the canon supplied version....

Do people really use ZoomBrowser? When I first got my camera, I used it to convert images from CRW format. I tend to shoot hundreds of images at a time, and when it came time to convert them from CRW format, the main question was which method was more painful, using the Twain driver, or using Zoombrowser.
The Twain driver was easy, but had a tendency to crash on me, and because of memory leaks, you could only realistically convert about 50 images at a time without having to shut everything and reboot.
Zoombrowser, on the other hand, was simply slow and buggy. It crashed on me all the time. And again, it was only possible to do about 50 images at a time before having to exit and reboot.
I'll admit that the "zoom" metaphor of the user interface was interesting for a minute or two at first, but I could never avoid tripping over the rest of the program long enough to appreciate it.
One especially annoying thing was that ZoomBrowser showed the "CRW" and "THM" files for a single picture side by side as though they were unrelated separate images. This meant I had to either manually move the "THM" files to another directory (before telling ZoomBrowser about the images, or it would try to relocate them after the move), or I had to select every other file when I wanted to do conversions.
As much as I loved the EOS D30 camera itself, playing around with ZoomBrowser made me wonder if I'd made a mistake in not going with the Nikon.
As soon as I found another way to convert CRW files, I quit using ZoomBrowser and never looked back. Lately, I generally use YARC for CRW conversion, and I'm working with the Canon SDK to create my own custom software.
So when I read the messages here about people wanting the new version of ZoomBrowser, it seems a lot like somebody asking for a fresh turd. Maybe it's fresher and newer than the old turd, but even if the odor is different, it's still a turd.
So what's the attraction? Is it just that it's free software that comes with the camera, or what?

I use zoom browser only to copy the images to my hard drive. When I use the TWAIN driver with my favorite graphics editor (paint shop pro) I have to save each image individually. Zoombrowser also stores the photo information (flash, shutter speed, aperature, etc) with the jpg, something that the TWAIN Driver does not do.
I tried using zoombrowser to manage my images, but it's just too slow and doesn't work very well. I was hoping that the new version was better, but I still don't know how to get it. You're probably right about the fresh turd thing, but I won't know until I've tried it.

You should get a CompactFlashcard reader and simply copy the files. It's much, much faster, and you don't have to worry about any information being lost as with the TWAIN capture.
If you have a laptop, you should be able to get a PCMCIA adapter that your CF card will plug into for $10-$15.
For a desktop machine, you should be able to get a CF reader that connects via either USB or FIREWIRE. (Firewire is faster, if your machine has it.) They start at about $30 and go up from there.

Thanks for your advise - I am downloading BreezeBrowser now.
I was so frustrated with ZoomB. I reinstalled the software so many times - cos of bugs - it is slow - and as everyone points out - it is impossible to get an update....
I think it is a shame that Canon spoil what is an excellent Camera setup with poor software and support. Better not to supply the freeware if you are not prepared to support it. -
Anyway, thanks again for the advise...

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
This Breeze Downloader (also available from www.photocult.de (http://www.photocult.de) ) is WAY better than the Canon Zoombrowser for plain downloading. I prefer using something else than the Zoombrowser for catalogueing (?) my pictures, so I have been haunted by this dreadful piece of software. The Canon Downloader has truly made my day (maybe even my week ;) ). Most excellent piece of advice. Again: Thank you!!

Can someone send me the URL to the Zoombrowser? I lost my solution CD, and I like its feature.
Thanks a lot,
