I am trying to decide between the 4 GB Sandisk Ultra CompactFlash card and the Hitachi Microdrive 6 GB

both cost $179 but the Microdrive has 2 more GBs!

I think I am correct in saying that the Sandisk doesn't have any moving parts while the Microdrive is basically a really small hard drive with moving parts. Am I correct????

if so what are the advantages and disadvantages between the 2 choices?
and which one would you buy?

you're correct about the microdrive. i ended up buying 2 2gb sandisk extreme 3 CF cards. i just got the camera today but the cards seem to be holding up to the 30d with no prob. write speeds seems prett fast. i'd so go with the CF's IMO.

i want the Sandisk because it doesnt have any moving parts but you get 2 more GBs with the mircodrive for the same price!!!!

If you want the least probability of problems with a storage card don't get a microdrive. Do you really need 6GB anyway? I prefer using 2GB CF cards and carry extras when I expect the possible need. 2 GB Kingston Elite Pro 50X CF cards (what I use) can be had for $75 or less.

I have a Sandisk Extreme III 4 gb CF card and a Hitachi 4 gb microdrive. In use it takes slightly longer to clear a full buffer with the microdrive. When downloading using a card reader the Sandisk is noticeably faster.

Image quality and reliabiltiy have been the same for both. Neither has let me down despite speculation about moving parts, etc.

"by slightly longer to clear a full buffer", what do you mean by that? .5 sec or 1 sec or 1.5? any idea?

thanks

If your thinking of just getting one big card, thats a terrible idea.

Get 2 smaller cards instead. Should one card fail on you, you have a backup card. As far has MicroDrive or SanDisk.. I use both. Never had a problem with either one.

I like microdrive for capacity. SanDisk is solid state and the way to go for sure.

never had a problem with my 4gb hitachi microdrive....hope it stays that way.

I've heard all the warnings and certainly plan on moving to cf cards, but back when I bought my microdrive....they didn't even make CF cards that big.

Not just one - two, as soon as possible.
