I shot these in a hotel with a canon 20d, 50mm 1.8, timed release slow shutter with a 60w deak lamp with the shade off.
It's a Bi*ch to get something in focus under such shallow DOF.
let me know what you think. be nasty. be nice. be whatever.

kind of reminds me of one of those art exhibits that make you feel dumb because you don't get it... okay, i'll admit it. I don't get it... But I hate hotels, hate being away from home.. points for you for being creative and able to entertain yourself.. Me, i'd take strange angle shots of the bible.. Or, around these parts... the book of mormon...

okay...
I was looking for more of a critique on the shots, not necessarily on the reason why I did them.
I was playing with the camera and trying something different. Nothing more than that, there is really nothing to "get".

Wow. That is a shallow DOF! I'm ordering a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 this week. I can just imagine how bad MY shots are going to be!!! :-)

okay, I really don't like the second.. there is no focus and next to no composition.. the first one is interesting a different kind of feeling behind it. Might be an interesting to look at print. I would have liked to have seen either your face or your hands in focus... and then add the grain and conversion.. but it's easier to comment on a photo if you have an idea of what you were trying to do in the first place....

The second shot doesn't work very well. The first is very good. As you mentioned, the shallow dof has made it difficult to focus. The shot would be a complete success if you had at least one finger in focus. Keep experimenting.

right on! that's just too funny not to reference. :)
if we're going by the title of the post then this is stictly a self portrait, right?
in that sense, i think a reshot is necessary because nothing of importance is in focus. unless of course you work with your hands and you wanted to portray that. you should use a larger dof for self portraits because, as you've already stated, it's a pain to get anything in focus when shooting yourself.
