Water ... the !Kung San might have trouble this week but not anyone else here I suspect.

Also, I just remembered I have a cuppa brewing under my tea cosy! Thanks for the reminder :-)

Thank you, Beth. Actually, I still have a million ideas in my head for Water but they will have to wait for my second shot. I was 'doing a Condy' this morning, saw that and just had to have it.

Good one Mr Bloke. You're setting a standard again this week. Hey the main question for me tho' now is this: is that silver car in the shop or a reflection?

::John::
1st of April 2006 (Sat), 03:20
It is a very bad reflection. There is a street down to the right (east), the sun was coming up and that car was stopped at the lights waiting for a green (which is amazing in itself in the village). I probably should have cropped it out - but I wanted the image straight from the camera and I was standing in the middle of the road and didn't want to stand there much longer so that was the only shot from that angle.

As usual the first pic is precisely what I expected: something completely unexpected.:D That is why I love this so much. Everyone's take on the subject is so different. Great shot kiwi.

Lookin' forward to your efforts In2 lad ... and I fancy Ms Nouna could be coming up with a mildly off the wall take on the theme.

Me ... well I was practically PP-ing myself ready to take some canal boat shots but then discovered that the only ones bobbing about on the briny this week were fit for nothing but sinking. My arty farty style shots (with a vague political edge) failed because the Jup 85mm and me had a fall out when my watery eyes went to pot focusing the bugger

So, I'm left with these two which just about make it within the 'rules':

Sorry about the weather guys. Although you will probably want to be-head me when I tell you it is mid 70s, sunny, with a slight breeze here. I have taken only 2 shots that could work, but I am planning on getting something special tonight. Hope it all works out.

Dave, those are some splendid shots, especially the second. Looks like a very nice place.

Mr K. That second shot is really very good. The first one had me wondering what you were up to until I went to your link of the B/W images. We don't have canal gates (or canals like that) here so I had NO idea - but that is the opening boom for the canal, isn't it? Well done - obscure but appropriate.

Becca - spot on! Great use of DOF and you got that drop perfectly.

Peacock. I'm with you. I could sit and watch a harbour all day, too. Thanks for that one - it reminds me of the many times I have sat and watched a similar view.

Nice work people!

Becca, really like your shot. :)

I tried taking a shot of boiling fish for dinner, but it looked horrible...trust me. I could take the easy route and just take shots of ducks in the local lake, but that'll be my last resort unless I come up with something better.

Gosh, these are all nice. And so different!

Kiwibloke -- I'm getting red x's for your images. Wish I could see the real thing!

Condyk -- Really like your second one with the wonderful curved building. What are the white hoop-like things at the end of the canal?

Becca -- Nice composition and color. Good job.

Peacock -- You're putting me in relaxed trance. Staring at water and fire does it to me every time.

I still need to come up with something for my shots. Hopefully I can get out tomorrow. Today was too busy with family. Now if only I could come up with a few good ideas.

Those last two shots are stunning. Makes me not want to post mine.:(

Well I went out tonight to take the shots I had planned. I wasn't thrilled with the results. I went to the entrance of a neighborhood that I drive by everyday. They have a nice water feature with several steps, some plants and a light that I did not realize was in there. It is very blown, and after an hour or so of PP I just couldn't get it to look right so I just left it the way it was. I am going to try and get some other shots tomorrow.

The pic looks horrible after the compression. Oh well, it will have to do for now.

well... I had aspirations to get a fountain in Downtown Boise for the challenge at nighttime.. But, instead I ended up at Old Chicago... getting drunk with friends. you see it all started when I forgot that Ashley didn't like Manny and I invited Manny to go to the Winter carnival in McCall with us.. Now, Ashley decided to make Travis go and the two of them ended up drinking Keystone beers all day long... and I promised that one day i'd make it up to them by having a few drinks........ so, that was tonight.. two yagerbooms, one chocolate cake, one lemon drop, and one.... SoCo later... I realized that I would be taking a cab home... My uncle Mike always said to take advil to ward off a hangover... and what do you take advil with?? WATER....Ha ha:lol:   .. so, here's my post. I hereby promise to take a real picture tomorrow..

My weekend plans changed and I had to work Saturday (bathurst/orange) and Sunday (special church day) = no shooting time.

I took a day off today instead, and I did some insurance pics of the wife's "new" car (anniversary today) which is a 13 yo ex-police car. Its had a lot of TLC by the previous private owner for 12 of those 13 years. Its in fantastic condition mechanically and very pretty with a 3yo paintjob and 16" sport wheels. It only cost 25% more than my recent 30D which took the pic with a 50mm on a monopod.

::John::

Nah - it is almost walking distance from here - if Military Road wasn't so long...

um - Lions, Tigers, Apes, Meerkats, Dragons of the Komodo variety, some Aussie type birds, Giraffes, Nasty looking lizard, ducks, Penguins, 2 'roos, Koalas, Dingos but Ernie wasn't there - all sorts, really.

Given the location (I got a couple of good landscape shots, too - 2 that will do OK as a pano) I am thinking of buying a membership for Aussie Bride and me - around $150 a year with unlimited visits to Taronga, Western Plains, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

I gotta get more CF cards - some of these jpegs are over 10Mb each. I managed to run out (used 2Gb) just as I got to the exit.

The place was crowded - lots of Canon gear - many, many Americans with 20Ds and 100-400 lenses. Some Europeans (I chatted to quite a few. Hey, I was bored.)

For the coast, I really like Newport Bay. Nice beaches, can walk on the docks watch people crab/fish. Take a whale watching ride. Kind of a long drive from where you are though.

Downtown PDX, Broadway and the waterfront are another fun and interesting place. Also the Rose Garden.

Multnomah Falls, walk the trails around the falls.

Silverton Falls. http://www.ohwy.com/or/s/silvrfal.htm

Umpqua River in Roseburg, again a long drive.

The Enchanted Forest just outside of Salem is a fun place to goof off with some friends.

Crater Lake is one of my favorite places to go, but since I moved to this part of Oregon I don't visit there much anymore.

The John Day Fossil Beds is a place I have been wanting to go see, but I haven't made the time to go yet.

Nice idea and very easy for me ... the challenge will be taking a different perspective to my standard 'documentary' shots of my local area.

How about 'constructing forms'? Then we're not all out shooting buildings, but it's clear that we can shoot lego, etc ;-) So the focus is really on somehting in process of being built.

I agree. It was me that started a recent campaign to try and make the competitions section a bit more newbie-friendly by adding dates to the contest thread titles. When you have been here a few weeks or months you forget how confusing it was when you first dipped your toe in - lots of threads about fun stuff that is all over!
