I need all your help because I am driving myself round the bend.
I am looking to buy a printer for use with my Canon S50 digital camera. I have heard very good reports about the Canon CP300 Dye Sub Printer. I am also comparing this with the canon i950 inkjet.
All of my output will be probably 6 x 4, therefore based on quality of output alone, which is better a 300 x 300 dpi dye sub or a 4800 x 1200 inkjet (canon i950).
Most reports state that Dye-Sub Printers produce better results than inkjet ( colours more vibrant).
Can anybody help me with this dilema please.
Thank You
Melvyn

All I can offer is this.
I was thinking Dye Sub as well,.. because I find Inkjets a hassle and unrelaible,. I did not like Epsons and HP print quality was not up to par.
In the end I tried the i950,.. for a little over $200.00 it was a good price and the print media is much more affordable than Dye Sub.
I do not regret the decision. The prints are fantastic and the unit seems very solid.

CyberDyne,
Have experienced any kind of color fading with your prints? An office mate of mine had a bunch of pictures printed on her inkject printer and posted on her wall. They looked really nice in the beginning but after several months of hanging on the wall most of colors have faded so that the print in now predominantly green. I think she said that she used an HP printer. I was wondering if the prints from Canons and/or the Espons are prone to fading as well. I know that the dye-subs are not as suseptible to fading as the inkjet prints are.

I have the i950 and the printing is spectacular, I actually have 4 framed images printed on it hanging now. If it's for personal use I would go with the bubblejet.

I don't know much about Dye-Sub printers, but I know that I LOVE my i950. I had the s820 for serveral months before I purchased the i950, and I haven't noticed any fading. I only print my favorite pictures, and figure that if they do fade, I'll just print another one. If I have a high volume job to print I upload to Printroom.
People are always amazed at the quality of my prints, and sometimes don't even believe that they came from an inkjet. I've compared my prints to those of an HP and there is a noticable difference, IMO.

I had high hopes for the CP200 printer BUT it is only really usable connected to a computer. Used as a standalone printer, the prints, though vibrant, have a distinct yellow cast to them. You can correct this by hooking it to a computer and using the driver to tone down the yellow.

I've only had it for a little over a month. So far no fading... but only time will tell.

Melvyn, IMO the i950/i9100 are the best available. I have a i9100 and an HP as well. Frankly, the HP is junk in comparison and the HP prints do discolor and fade. I also have a Canon CP100 dye-sub for trips, but I wouldn't dream of using it for anything else but give-aways or postcards.
BTW, paper plays a big role too.
Just remember, like bones in the desert, the sun will bleach and discolor anything over time. Protect your prints of whatever kind.
