Some of us have shots of insects flying. I thought it would be nice to have a thread regrouping the best of them. Here is mine, not very good but this is my best one.

Aside from the hoverflies which I posted in another thread here's a couple more:

Common darter dragonflies mating at my pond:

One of only 2 wasp shots I managed to get last year:

Common darter in flight across the pond at the local park:

Not exactly in flight, but here's a shot of a darter at the moment of touchdown, note the wings are still in "combat mode":

Seriously, I too am in awe of the crispness of these inflight shots. I cannot even get a flying insect in my viewfinder yet!

I'm amazed by all these shots...how close do you actually get with the lens of your camera in order to get these great shots?

Ok, I'll bite. Are you fixing a focus point and waiting for the insect to get there or are you focusing on the fly (no pun intended)? I don't see how you can nail it just right while these tiny things are in motion.

Amazing photos by all, by the way.

Both wonderful shots Leorooster, I've not managed a decent dragon in flight yet :( .

Thanks Brian! I'm sure you will get an in flight dragon soon. After a closer look.......yes, it appears to be to same type of hoverfly as yours. I like this type better than the other ones, for some reasons ;)

The bugs are coming back soon. Can't wait to try out my new gears. :)

a bit of both for me

i can't speak for the others, but.....
what i did for mine was watch what flowers the flies were visiting and pre focus on the flower...... (with camera on a tripod) then wait till it came along........... (and fired the shutter with a remote)

the top down view of the hoverfly was handheld....

I pre-focus to get roughly there and then fine tune. My hoverfly shots are all "in the open" but you can help things by picking a flower and waiting for something to turn up. With the right angle you can exclude the flower and just get the fly.

Knowing the behaviour of the subject helps a lot as well. The hoverflies will hover over the same spot waiting for a mate so that's the time to get them. Some dragonflies patrol a regular route so you can learn that, pick a spot and wait.

A little knowledge gained from just watching the subject means you can stop chasing them like a maniac and put yourself in the right place at the right time so they turn up and say cheese ;)

Wow.

Those small CCD cameras have great depth of field, I am after one just for this sort of work.

Until then, I will have to stick with my 300D + doubler + 100mm F2.0
