I bought an EOS 10D in Japan, with a price tag set to about 1500 euros.

Has anyone any clue why it costs in europe about 2500 euros?

What is canon's policy regarding this. At 1500 a couple of people could afford it. But 2500 is a high tag ...

Amazing ...

price in austria is about 1750.- € now. I think 2500.- € is a fake because Canon's official price is 2200.- €

In the US, 10D street price seems to be $1400, maybe less, and I am going to get one there.

The high price in Europe indicates a high tariff on imported goods or inefficient distribution.

In Hong Kong, it is about $1500.

This means that America's distribution system is the most efficient, Hong Kong and Japan acceptably efficient, followed by Europe, the most inefficient.

Camera prices may be reasonable in Japan because they are produced there. Prices of imports seem to be very high in Japan.

European Union is a closed market, on the whole. Make money there but live elsewhere.

We have 22% VAT here ...

I paid 2200 EUR for my 10D (in Finland). I have been watching, but the prices have not dropped.

I bought the 70-200 f4 L from the US for $580 USD. It retails for 1100 EUR here.

I have also noticed camera shops selling used D30 cameras for 1700 EUR. The G3 retails for about 800 EUR (still) and the new G5 is about 1000 EUR.

Last fall, I bought a new Sony S-85 in Seattle for $450 USD. When I traded it in here, the trade in value was 650 EUR. I did not complain!

Last week, I bought a Sony DCR-TRV950 MiniDV camcorder + extra lithium battery, Sony X 0.7 wide angle lens, and Sony smart shoe Zoom microphone from B & H. I paid $2025 USD (1800 EUR) for all of that. The same camera + equipment would have cost me 3100 EUR ($3500 USD) here. Yikes.

I paid £1275 in UK, a fortnight ago. What's that, 1800 euros?

You could have flown to New York, bought a 10D, and enjoyed a few days of vacation without spending extra.

But Europe has a lot of historical buildings that other countries in Asia and America do not offer. A small price to pay!

I wholeheartedly agree with you!! A trip to NYC would have been enjoyable!

However, I gave the used S-85, used EOS Elan 7E, used 540 EZ, used 20-35 USM and a used tripod (all bought in the US at lower prices) in trade for my 10D. I only paid 400 EUR in the end ... : )

However, the 17-40 f4 L was a different story: 1200 EUR ...

Oh well.

List price of 10D for UK is £1500, but generally it can be picked up from on the High Street for around £1250-£1300. I ordered mine from Jessops and they charge £1249 body only.

Paid £1176 in UK and then got £100 cash back from Canon, giving net price of £1,076 (Including VAT)

Equivalent to Euro 1535, or about $1,710

Photography requires objects and tools. In Europe you have many great historical sites and old buildings, but camera price is a little high. In America, price is lower, but we have fewer great places to visit and take pictures. I think you have a better deal.

Which place of historical importance would you recommend in Helsinki? I am visiting there shortly.

In Malaysia can get 10D for RM 5500 street price.
But for retail it was quoted RM 6333.

Check this site: http://www.helsinki.fi/eng/index.html

I am not living in Helsinki (thank heavens), but I would suggest a day trip out to the island of Suomenlinna (old military fortification), the House of Parliament, the amazing home architecture around Eira (the is the foreign embassy area - old Helsinki), and if you have time, take a super fast ferry to Tallinn (1.5 hour per direction) and visit the Old Town. If you want "old" things to see and photograph, nothing compares to Tallinn. Not even Stockholm's Gamla Stan.

Enjoy your trip!

The best price in New Zealand at present is NZ $3000 including goods and services tax (vat) this equates to US $1740 or 1547 Euro. This price is a very recent drop, I am pissed because I paid $3500 NZ for mine from the same supplier a month ago! (not really, if you rush in you pays top dollar!) Erin
