I recently started having a problem getting reliable focus lock using my 10D with a Canon 28-105mm / f3.5-4.5 lens. The problem seems to be most prevalent when the lens is set towards the wide angle focal length, but even at the 105mm focal length, the problem still occurs. The only way to get the the shutter to release is to set the lens to manual focus. However, when setting the lens to MF, I can't seem to focus at infinity.

Opinions on weather this is lens or body related? I've called Canon and they seem to feel the problem is lens related. I'm going to send them the lens and body to check out. Even before the focus lock problem started, I have not been very happy with the auto focus sharpness, so I am asking Canon to check that out also. I got this camera in June 2003, however, the lens I have had for about three years.

As always, comments are appreciated...

I was having problems with my D30 and a 100-300 lens. I sent both to Canon after conferring with NJ service. Suddenly they said they no longer do ANY service work on the 100-300! After getting the body and lens back I found out the lens was the real culprit and sent it off to GA for repair. So what did I pay Canon for??

I hope you experience is better.

Pete,

What was the facility you sent your 100-300 lens to in GA?

I finally got my lens and D10 body back from the Canon repair facility in New Jersey. I'm not really sure what the problem was, as they didn't provide much of an explanation as to what was done. The camera body was returned rather quickly with a brief message that it was cleaned and adjusted (covered under warranty). The lens was returned separately in 5 weeks with no description of the repair work. Cost was about $125. Everything seems to work again, so I'm pleased.

I sure did miss not being able to use it for 5 weeks though. I think I'll order a EF 50mm, 1.4 from B&H. At least that will cover me for the next time a lens craps out. Any comments on the reliabilty of the Canon lenses? This lens that I had repaired was only a few years old with fairly light usage up until just recently (when I got the 10D).

It would be nice to get feedback from people who have used the Canon lenses extensively for many years. Do the "L" lenses offer more reliability? What about the "IS" lenses? (I'm thinking about getting one of the 80-200mm IS lenses).

Thanks for any feedback...
