Can anyone tell me if I'll get decent shots with the Sigma 28-300 Compact Hyperzoom Aspherical IF?
Will be taking a family trip soon and really don't want to bring the 50 1.8 and a 28-105.
I'll be needing the extra zoom for wildlife...maybe women in bikinis too j/k
The only reviews i saw online were 3 or 4 it's either they love it or they hate it...I'm looking for actual photos taken or something more useful...
will be using it with the D30. I love this camera btw
Thank you all in advance...

Despite owning a number of much better lenses,. (and much more expensive),.. I still use this lens quite frequently on my 10D. (in fact it is on my camera right now in my desk drawer at work)
I primarily shoot wildlife, so even when taking the camera to work on a sunny day, I like to have that 300mm in a pinch. It has served me quite well. For a breif amount f time I had the Sigma 28-200,. which took better pics at 200mm than the 28-300mm does at 300mm,.. but that is more an issue of weight,. stability, and hand shake than anything near as i can tell.
In the end,. If you get the lens at a Ritz or other local shop, you can surely try it out and return it if you find the images are not up to par.

I have been using the 28-300 for quite a while now. its not as fast as the my cannon 28 - 85 (i think).. but it works ok for the work i do. I dont use that lense for my wedding shots, but i do use it for everything else.
Overall, its a decent lense, i think.
just my 2-cents

have same lens and found quality good, have also bought sigma 17 - 35 ex lens and think the quality the same
I sharpen using c1le and print in photoshop for excellent prints off a canon 900 printer

Thanks guys! I guess I'll try this lens out.
What do you think of using this lense at 200mm for true 300mm situations to eliminate shake, softness, and other negative things I'm reading due to the 1.6 magnification factor. Or are images more than satisfactory using Adobe USM at full 480mm?

I use Sigma 28-300 lens extensively and it is my primary lens for everyday shooting.
I must say I have nothing but praise for it.
It is a fine blend of quality at a good price.

What I do is shoot a lot! I find if I am working at 300mm and can't get the shutter speed I need to keep things as sahrp as I'd like,. If I shoot 6-12 images I am bound to get a number of keepers in the bunch. But in those circumstances I come to expect about 60-70% of the images to have noticeble camera shake.
Of course a tripod would help a lot too.

I use this lens quite frequently on my 10D. I feel that it's not as sharp as my Canon 100mm 2.8 macro (duh!) but it's a good lens in and of itself. I find primarily some softness that is surely due to camera shake as I rarely use it with a tripod since it's my pick-up-and-go lens, and I almost always use it at either 300 or 28, seldom in-between. I'd rather have 28mm and 300mm fixed focal length lenses, but I settle for the sigma since it's portable and convenient.

Thanks all.
I'm going to give this lens a try. I'll have a couple of days to play with it before the trip.

I owned the sigma 28-300 and used it with my D30 and D60 and it worked very well. I started having problems with color balance with the 1D and even worse issuse with the D10 backgrounds were washed and photos blown out but not always. I switched to the tamorn sd glass and the problem no longer exisits. I think that if the lens and camera were bought about the same time they should be compatible. I do like the tamron better though. smaller and thinner glass and it is fairly sharp.
Neither is as sharp as Canon glass. I also use the 75-300 canon IS which is a little faster lens but does not have the low end. Since I have two cameras I prefer to us my 24-70 2.8 on one and the 100 -400 on the other. and cover a lot more. depending on what I am shooting sometimes I use the 24-70 & 70 200 2.8 on the two cameras.
It is great to have the 28-300 if you are on a trip and don't want to carry all that extra weight but the trade off is that some shots might be a little soft. By the same token you won't miss any shots changing lenses on the camera and also be less apt to get dirt and dust inside of your camera.
