Just got a new G3 with a 512MB CF card. Planning on taking the camera on vacation in a couple of weeks and wondering if the 512MB will be enough.
I'll be going to Sedona, AZ for one week.
How many shots will I get on a RAW setting as opposed to JPEG at maximum res?
THANKS!

Each JPG shot is about +/- 1.8 mb, so you should get about 284 shots on your card. RAW files are almost twice as large, so figure less than 140 shots.
Is that enough? Only you can decide.

Scott,
Thank very much for that information. Still can't answer the question as to whether it's enough or not. I guess I have to think on it awhile.

I went on a 4 day trip to New York and took around 120 shots overall. You can probably get by with a 512MB card depending on your shooting habit and as long as in the end of the day you delete the shots you don't want.

Thank you! Good advice. Roughly the equivalent of 5 24 exp rolls of 35MM. I'll just have to, as you mentioned, delete the discards on a daily basis.

I have found most of my Ls JPGs to be at or around 2.5 MB each. I generally get 120 images on my 256MB card using best JPG. My RAW images, if I remember correctly, are around 5 MB each.
Check your manual for approximates. Page 197
Also, you could just start taking pictures until you fill the card. Both for RAW and Ls JPGs. That will give you a good estimate.
I have gotten around my storage/memory issues with the ImageTank G2: Review Here (http://www.deckyon.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=3)
It reads the CF cards and downloads them to a portable HD without the need of a computer.
Have a good trip.

I have the same problem, looking for someting like an XS drive.
130 pics is not a big number when you shoot digital!
I take raw pics on the 512 Mb and i keep the original 32Mb to make a jpeg familly serie (save some shots).
Also i delete directly the worse pics by looking at the LCD and each day i made a screening on the TV (better view on a large screen) to delete duplicate bad or unneeded pics.
The good side is that coming home you don't have to work 3 days to handle a thousand of pics

I have a 30 Gig X-Drive and love it! It is a great solution and very affordable.

What camera do you have? If you have a 4MP camera. are you sure that your RAW files are 5MB? My RAW images are between 2,600 KB and 3,100 KB. The most of JPG files at the best settings are between 1,200 KB and 1,900 KB

Just went on vaction for 2 weeks Approx 300 photos, but went to a photoshop and had them burn a disk $8 Cdn... So the 512 MB Card is more than enough.

Got a Laptop?..If so get a CF adapter and put on laptop hard drive and start over...otherwise...a Wal-Mart is usually close for another CF card

512 is probably enough for ~1 to 2 weeks but definitly not 3 weeks..
but to be honest, we are both in different situations so I wouldn't know..
The best way is to buy another 512 card (if you're low on cash) to be on the safe side, there should be plently providing you take jpgs only and maybe a couple of movies etc...

Rollie's Camera has been in Sedona for eons. I first went in 1977. It's still there. I haven't been in about three years, but probably still worth a visit. Nice folks. Check with them... they may be able to burn a photo disk for you, but I'm not sure. Otherwise, with as many artists, and photographers in and out of the area, I can't imagine you not being able to get that done someplace. Have fun!

I have a number of friends in Sedona and know there is much to photograph, much to try out your creativity on. I would definitely plan it so that you are unlimited. I travel a lot in the world, and try not to limit myself because when I get back I have a lot of choices to keep or dump. I also learned that the the LCD or even the hotel TV don't give you enough to know if a pic is really sharp and good enough, So when I shoot something important or unique, I want to have several shots to raise the likelihood one will be good. Nothing is worse than to get back after 6,000 miles, a month of travel and a lot of money spent to find your most treasured shot is fuzzy, smeared or not-quite-right. If you take your time with each shot, you will also find the total number of shots are less.
If you are going to spent money on a trip, don't hesitate to spend some money on your equipment so that you can bring some of your trip back home.

With a 512 MB CF-Card i can get 104 RAW Pics into my G5. So i´m quite sure that Scott´s approx. 140 RAW Pics on the G3 must be correct.
I have a few more other CF-cards and a laptop. But i don´t take the laptop with me when travelling :)

@ easter I was turisting London for a week with a 256mb card. I was in short the last day, but a little delete job spaced things up.
I do not think its necessary to store in RAW or jpeg superfine. Experience on print tells me the setting jpeg fine makes perfect A4 prints on my epson 2100.
Haven't experimented on A3 yet.
If you're planning to make prints smaller than A4, you may just as well use a lower storage setting (expanding the storage capacity further).
That's just my pragmatic opinion!
