I'm looking at the sd500 and the sd550 and doing the comparison at dell.com, it seems the only difference (besides forty dollars and a bigger screen) is the auto focus. The 500 says: a 9-point AiAF/1-point AF (Fixed to center). The 550: TTL contrast detection. What's the difference? Is one better or worse than the other?

Yep, looks like the 2.5" LCD makes the whole difference, and the 320x240@60fps movie mode.
As for the ttl contrast detection, just forget it. All digicams are based on that, since the beginning of digital. They use such hype to attract people, as if it were new feature.
