I have a Hoya R72 and a R90 and a 5D on order. Unfortunately:
1) They're both 58mm for my G3
2) While the R90 cost me $17 a year ago, that camera store got washed away by Katrina. A 77mm R90 is well over $400. YIKES!

I have the plans to convert my G1 to an IR only camera. I think I'll just go ahead with that.

What lens are you getting for the 5D?

HOLY CRAP! I'VE GOT A 50MM F/1.4 ON MY LIST!

I pushed my wife to the limit: $6500. I did this by getting the 5D, a 70-200 L IS, a 17-40 L, various odds and ends, AND THEN I THREW IN THE NIFTY! She originally saw two lenses on my list. I slipped the nifty under her radar. I'm so glad I did!

Oh baby, that's a 58mm filter lens! I can't wait to slap my R90 on the front of that puppy. F/1.4 should let in a whole lotta IR light.

I never looked at the filter size on the 50mm lens. I was happy enough that the two more expensive lenses have the same filter size. If I need a circular polarizer on the 50mm, I'll just use stepdown rings.

The G1 and G3 cameras have an IR Hot Mirror built in. I found instructions on how to remove it from the G1 (which is why I got the camera off of eBay). I found similar instructions for the 5D:
http://www.lifepixel.com/ir-tutorials/canon-5d-digital-infrared-conversion-instructions.htm

And then my wife comes in and finds me taking my 5D appart and using a utility knife (which she then uses on my...)

Sounds like you have quite a set up coming.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 is supposed to give a hot spot let me know if it does.

Well shucks. The 50mm f/1.4 is on the list of hot spot lenses. Oh well, that's not what I bought it for. Just the same, when the camera comes in, I'll try both the R72 and R90 filters on the lens.

Apparently the hot spot is part of the lens' anti-IR flare (or something). Hooding the lens MAY help, but may not. I saw nothing on the difference between R72 and the longer wavelength R90 filters with respect to hot spotting. I'll post results here.

If I ever get around to converting my G1 to IR only, I'll post those here as well. After all, that's why I told my wife I HAD to get a G1. :)

By the by, how many stepdown rings would I need to go from 77mm to 58mm if I wanted to test the IR filters on my 17-40 or 70-200 lenses. Sure, the vingetting would be OBSCENE, but it's all an experiment anyway.

As a wife that has been pushed to the limit many times, I feel it is my duty to inform your wife of exactly what is going on.

Could you kindly forward me her details - so we can have a girly chat about it?

Unless ofcourse you start posting ALL your lovely images you're taking and tell us all studiously how you did it - in which case I might change my mind.

Nice work there. One thing I will not miss are the 6-30 second exposures though. Cemetaries seem to be a very popular subject for IR.

Hoya R72, The exposure times varied between 6-30 seconds.

Great shots. As an infrared film worker in the past I'm very interested.

Has your camera been converted or are these results possible with the camera in out of the box condition?
