Where did you see this? There is nothing on Canon's website and a google search produced the following result!!

Your search - +canon +"powershot a80" - did not match any documents

I like the new twisting LCD, but i dont like how they took out the 640 mov.

Do you think it would of been worth the wait? Seems like the A70 didn't last for long untill they brough out the A80.

In a way i wish i waited for this camera, but in another way i got the deal of a life time on my camera so the $ers probally win. Mabey have enough $ers in a while to by another version down the road.

Queston: Where will it go next, the A90, but after that, wont they then run into the A100's, but don't the 100's, 200's etc already exist?

ThanX - If the price is right I'll be after an exchange - or selling my A70 once I have the A80. Or given the A60 is a cut down version of the A70 perhaps I'll wait to see what the A90 has to offer - 5M Pixels and unlimited movies perhaps? Or better still a 6* optical zoom :-) - Dream on?

When do u draw the line and buy a camera?
The next series will be better, but the one after that will to, so its great that there gettign better so soon, but sucks to keep buying them.

Such is the cost of rapid progress! (One could be cynical - but that road leads nowhere!!)

Oh sweet. I always regret getting the A70. Not because it's a bad camera, but because i just don't have the money right now to buy a G3 or a G5.

Maybe in a few months I'll be ready to buy my uber camera. Maybe by then, something greater than t he a80 or the G5 will have emerged.

the 640x480 movie mode apparently only is possible in 3MP sensors. I don't know why, but no 4 or 5MP CCD cameras have this mode. The A80 also includes (finally!) histogram mode preview. So it's even closer to the S45 than before. Probably the A90 also includes RAW mode :)

Friend of mine just bought a new sony, think it was, anyway, its a 5MP camera and according ot them it does do 640 videos.

I was thinking of upgrading, but after looking at the camera i know i wont be. I have the Tele and adaptor, with a free water proof thats been on order for 6 months.

The A80 has a different tele, think its 1.7x and has a new waterproof case. How anoying, 1 camera model above and you have to buy a new tele, adaptor and waterproof case.

Any ideas on why they do this?
Because it stops people like me buying the next version, (no extra $ers) and to new canon camera owners, they would have to buy the accessories anyway, so why make all the new things when they could us ethe old ones for a while.

But i do realise that eventually they will have to bring out better versions, but every time?

The A80 has a slightly larger CCD size so that the lens is changed to create better optical image. This means whole new adapter lenses. Sad, but image quality must take priority over ease of upgrading.

Where they can, I am sure the engineers of Canon duplicate accessories where they can (keeps manufacturing costs down.) Perhaps they could have used the same case for the A80, but they repositioned the buttons, and made the flip out LCD.

To allow for ease up upgrade, you would have lost the 4 meg ccd and the flip out LCD. Not really worth the upgrade then is it?

I'd wait for something like the A90 or models above befrore i upgrade, other wise i'd be doing it every time they brough something new out, at the rate would be expensive.

Wonder if they have a new adaptor to accomidate the TC-DC52, and seems the same size so might be able to fit into the WP-DC700, might not.

MGAC:
Please wait for something better, or simply wait, you bought the A70 only 2 months ago !!! :)
I plan to keep my S50 for at least a couple of years, or until it shreds to its component parts :)
My next step is to buy a "very different" camera, not just a "slightly better" one, so I see a 300D in my (hopefully!) near future, not a S60, or something similar. Even the S50 will be too much for a backup or pocket camera when the 300D arrives, so why to change it?
Long live to the old hardware :)

I'm not rushing into buying a new camera, the accessories wouldn't let me. I'd really liket he 4MP, but my CF wouldn't. I already chew through it like it is. When i go to sporting event's its a mater of seconds between shots, and sometimes continious.

The LCD screen i like, but that would be for about 5% of my shots, otherwise it would be in the same spot for the rest of the 95% as the A70 one. But when it goe's out on an arm like that it can be broken alot easier.

I couldn't downgrade to 320 vids.

Nice but there will be better. I've learn't pretty much everythign to do with the A70 for what i need, just working on photography generic skills, and as far as i see, would be the same as the A80.

i wonder if the A80 also has this E18 error.

The E18 error is usually a mechanical problem with the lens movement (obstruction, gear damage, gear off track, dirt, sand, corrosion...)

The A80 (since it has a newly designed lens) may incorperate one or more things the help reduce the change of the E18 error from occuring in the first place, but if the lens can't retract or extend, it will likely give the same error as all the other Canons for the same problem.
