This is a statue in Kirkcudbright remembering those lost at sea. Unfortunately the background is a carpark - what do you think?

Perhaps a new back ground would do wonders. I was thinking along the lines of a lighthouse to echo the statues form.

Or perhaps an abondoned fishermans house, or a few busted out boats.

Something to echo the story behind the statue.

Thanks for the suggestion - I think I've got some lighthouse shots somewhere........

Hi Damain

Stopbath is right. A different background would help a lot.
A nautical one if you have one or any plain background would help.

Also if you feel inclined, brightening and lightening the statue would also make a big difference.
A dark subject against a bright background seldom works well.

It's not your fault. This statue should be on a point overlooking the sea.

Thanks for the advice - I'll dabble with PS and see what I can come up with.

As to your final point - I did think when I saw it "why isn't it on the harbour edge rather than outside the toilets near the car park?"

In real life it is rather beautiful - it is carved froma single piece of wood.

Thank you for your comments Damian.

How interesting that this is presumably carved from a tree trunk.

No sign of the sculptor's name anywhere.

And what an insult placing his artwork between the
car park and the public toilets.

Gaining recognition as an artist is hard enough without being insulted like that.

Kind regards Damian

It is somewhat ironic that the statue is in Kirkcudbright "the artists town" famed for the school of the same name. Strange that the appear so lazy in placing this statue then.

I love the sculpture but the cars in the background do not really help. Perhaps a bit of manipulation could have changed the background to a more relevant (equally blurred) scene. It seems like the results you get from your digi are pretty good!

What is that grey "halo" arround the statue?

Check the HELP section of this forum and you will see how post a picture.

First you have to have your picture on a web site
and then load it from there.

Some sites like pbase don't allow you to do this without
payment. Other sites are OK eg your server's site.

Would like to see your result.

Hi Damian

If you know the address of the Town Council of Kirkcudbright,
you should drop them a line or send them an email
suggesting that they read the posts to your photo.

It might shame them into taking the statue away from
the car park and toilets and placing it in a more worthy place.

I am guessing here but it looks like the halo is from editing.

First the subject (statue) was selected with lasso or other tool, and copied into a new layer. Then the background was blurred. Since the original statue was still in the background, the blurring algorythm picked it up and used it blur into the white.

If the statue was cut out of the background, this likely would not have happened.

I kind of like the halo effect, though a new background would remove it, and it would have to be dodged/burned back in (the usual method of getting a halo)

Thanks for the comments. I'm searching my disks for something suitable.

I guess you could post it like any other photo. Or e-mail it to me and I'll do the posting. I'd be very interested to see it.

I did a quick job in PS and that happened - I kind of like it that way.

Hi Damian

I'm delighted that you are taking up the fight for the statue.
As Kirkcudbright claims to be an Artists' town you would think
that the citizens would be more sensitive than to place a work of art outside the public toilets.

Shame on them.

Would you want your photographs displayed on the wall
of the Public Toilets ? Even the outside wall ??

Write to them, Damian. If you want help, I'm with you.

Kind regards
hal
