Got these last night. The sky wasn't too exciting, but it still providing for some nice pinks and blues.

I think you should have cropped in the 2nd picture more to the right... on the left side, the tailight is a distraction.

love the reflections off the car in the first few. I almost thought it was one of those expensive paint jobs that make the car change color due to refleciton of light! 2 is my fav of the bunch, great shots!

You know...I debated that one with myself. I wanted some of the light there, but only did half because any more to the left would have included some of the roof spoiler (which kind of cluttered up the edge). Anyway, I think I agree with you...it might be less distracting w/o the light there.

ditto that -I'm going to try that. Problem is to get the sun to set over water I'd have to get over the other side of the continent. OTOH, sunrise may be a goer...

Nice stuff! Looks like you had fun with it! ...it might be less distracting w/o the light there. On a long exposure you can turn the light on for just part of it so you can see it, but it won't be blown out. OTOH, sunrise may be a goer... Expect some condensation on the car, so take towels! ;)

Thanks, guys, I really appreciate the comments. Too bad I was one night off, though. I took those photos on Monday night, and on Tuesday we had one of the most incredible sunsets I'd ever seen. Unfortunately I was on my way home from work and couldn't take advantage of it. Oh well...sometimes I'm lucky with timing and others times I'm way off.:)

I'm amazed nobody has commented on #3. It's just stunning, looks like something you'd find in the sales brochure. Well done.

1, 2, and 7 are absolutely stunning. Excellent hues in the gradient horizon reflections.
Something about the framing on 7 really catches my attention.
What were your settings on these if you dont mind sharing and was there any post work done to bring out the colors?

For #7, it was a 3.2 second exposure at f7.1, iso 100. 7 & 8 were taken 30 minutes after sunset, so it was getting quite dark at that point. The colors really came out when I tweaked the levels and increased the saturation a little. #1 & 2 were at 1/5, 5.6, 100, 8 minutes after sunset.

Nice shots!! The area looks familiar. Is that the beach in Saugatuck?

You must have recognized Mt. Baldhead in the background. :D Good guess! Yes, that is at Oval Beach.

That's a very nice area. Unfortunately, we only make it out there once a year in October. A shot (http://homepage.mac.com/messnerk/sns.jpg) from the other side at the Ship n Shore Motel.

Beautiful picture, kirk. Were you on the water or was that taken with a zoom from a dock?
The river looks pretty calm...it's not often you see it that way. I'm assuming most of the boats were gone for the season.
By the way, it looks like you missed this thread of mine: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=149199
Definitely something else you'll recognize! :-D

Thanks! This was taken at the end of October. I was sitting on the deck at the Ship n Shore motel. It's right on the river. I used my only lens at the time - 28-135 :)

I've always wanted to stay at that hotel, but have never taken the opportunity. I pretty much grew up in the Saugatuck area as a child (summer family home) and I always felt like an outsider when I walked past that hotel...as if the locals weren't allowed because it's for visiting "members only." How are the rooms?
Did you check out that link of the SS Keewatin?

I just checked out your link. Must have missed it the first time :) Looks like you had to be out on the water to get those shots. I only got one, over by Butler's? Steak House.
The rooms ween't anything fancy. Very clean though, and the deck right outside the door is nice. Everyone there was very friendly to us. They have a large room in the middle with fireplace and TV. Nice place to have breakfast.
Here's a couple from the end of October 2005:
