I am not at all thrilled about 300D and infact a bit saddened.
After waiting for about a year, i bought 10D two weeks ago for
1500$.
Now with 300D, how much do you think the 10D prices would drop ?

I don't see the reason for them to drop... 300D is an entry level D-SLR camera. In the film world, did Rebel Ti announcement drop prices for Elan 7? I doubt it...

Unless you buy Grey Market, Canon maintians a pretty firm grasp of there products pricing. I doubt it will have any effect on the 10Ds price for the immediate future.

Case in Point,. Canon plans very carefully its supply chain to NOT ALLOW any old stock to be available after a model is relesed. When the D60 was released the D30 has allready disapeared,. like wise with the 10D and D60. Those few whacko Brooklyn vendors that still have D30s or D60s are trying to get more for them than the 10D goes for retail!!!!!

And as others pointed out,. the 1Ds price did not alter when the 10D was released. They are not in competition with themselves. It was Nikon that needed to cut prices.

I see no reason for the prices on the 10D to drop at all. The D-Rebel/300D is an entry camera and not in the same category or market. I am happy to see this camera on the market as it hits a great price point and market that Canon would (have been) losing a grasp on with the new Sony out.

Some people say they are po'd about this camera coming out after buying a 10D? Puhleeze. The 10D is much more camera than the D-Rebel is. Sure it has the same sensor, but that's where the similarity ends.

Now if you all are THAT unhappy with this new D-Rebel then sell ME your 10D to me and go buy one. After having the 10D I doubt most people would be happy with the D-Rebel. Personally I wouldn't sell my 10D for this D-Rebel, no way, no how.

Now wait until next year when they come out with an 8mp 10D and the forums will burst with more crying...

The positive side of this (maybe) is that more lenses are sold and the price drops -- Yeah I know a pipe dream, but we all gotta have one.

Let's welcome this new entry-level consumer camera with open arms and not be pro/semi-pro snobs about it, or sit around and beat (yet another) dead, whining, crying horse about how bad Canon is every time they release a new camera.

Get out and shoot some pictures!! :D

My son asked me today, after seing my 10d, if one day price will go down that he could afford one for himself.
I told him, wait till next year, when 10D will cost $1000Us.
I think this will happen.

Does it matter how much the price MIGHT drop ?
You've got your 10D, it's a brilliant camera, go out and use it and enjoy it. You were prepared to pay £x or $x or x whatevers for it, you've done it. go and get the benefit and pleasure from it!

Yes i think you are right. I am not complaining about the camera. I was just thinking if, the 10D drops by a 100-200$, then that money can go towards a better lens.
Not all of us are professionals you know, so we need to achieve a fine balance between our hobby and our waliets :-)
Having said that I am absolutely enjoying my 10D and i wouldn't give it away for the world

O K point taken, but neither am I a professional.
I must admit I like the latest toys whenever possible and have spent a lot of my pennies (pension) up-grading over the years. Amongst others, I've had a G2 which was a great camera, a D30 which I thought was not so great, and now my 10D which is GREAT ! The 10D will be staying with me for quite a while, it is that good.

IMO, it will drop. so are you wondering if you could return it now or get a price match?

myself, i'm waiting to buy the 10D _AFTER_ the syebold show in san francisco in a couple weeks. i just want to know that the SOMETHING like the 3D isnt gonna be release really soon for NOT MUCH more than the 10D...

face it, anytime you walk out of the store, there is something better and cheaper right behind it... ;)

This is completely analogous to the computer business. Things will always get cheaper, and usually better. I just bought a killer P4 machine with all the bells and whistles for about 1/3 of what a middling 486 system cost me not that many years ago. I can be certain that in a relatively short period, this machine will be old and sluggish by the standards of the day.

The point is this: there will eventually be a better, cheaper successor to the 10D. It may come in 6 month, or not for another two years. Only the fine people at Canon know for sure. In the meantime, you will have the best camera for the money that is currently available. Use it. Enjoy it. Savor the moment.

The question is not how long one should wait until 10D price falls significantly. The question is when 3D, a digital counterpart of EOS3, will be available and at what price.

Perhaps I should hold on to my D30 and wait a little. But how long?

Just a couple of questions to ponder...

How much did the D60 drop in price while it was a current model?

Why would the 10D drop in price because canon have released an inferior model?

Prices will only drop if nikon introduce a semi-pro 6+ Mp DSLR for under the 10D price, canon would not intorduce one product that will cause them to loose money on another, not good marketing sense.

Ever wondered why canon didn't flood the market with the 10D, and why not many stores kept a large stock of them. As an example in the UK Jessops were allocated 2 10D's per store at point of release! Still not many stores hold much 10D stock. I bet they flood the market with the 300D though, it is the perfect upgrade from consumer digital - especially if you buy the kit with lens!

The 10D is not going to drop in price. Canon has economic geniuses marketing and pricing their DSLR line. The only room for drop was the 1D once the 1Ds came out. The 1D still has a viable market at the lower price. The Digital Rebel takes care of the sub 10D level and those of us who need the functions of the 10D will pay the extra $500 for them. Had I known when I purchased my 10D that a digital rebel would be out 2 months later I still would have snapped the 10D up. It's the right features at the right price. Only the "fell off the back of a truck" type dealers can offer the 10Ds at prices lower than $1200 due to Canon's brilliant pricing strategy.

Did the D30s price go down when D60 came out?

Did the D60 price go down when 10D was intriduced?

No...

the 10D's price will go down onky if ANOTHER manufacture offers a competitive product that forces the 10D's price down (Like what 10D did to the D100)

Canon will not introduce a body that will effect the 10Ds market untill they are ready to replace out right as they did with D30, D60 etc....

I guess the interesting question here is how much will the 300D price drop in the next three months.

Remember that 3 months ago the 10D was $1500 everywhere. Now you can find a lot of places with prices in the $1300's range.

If the 300D will be at $700's range in three or four months, then it will be a very attractive deal for a lot of people.

Maaaan... If I played this game I'd have shot myself long ago... Declining cost is a fact of life. No matter what the marketing geniuses try to do...

I paid full street for my D10 and any decline in cost of acquisiion can be compensated for by realized opportunity cost (yeah I still remember Econ 101). This means that the pictures and memories I got during the time since I bought the camera will compensate for the savings.

I don understand the opposite argument of investing the difference in more gear, but heck... We'd spend on that anyway wouldn't we?

Since I bought my D10 in July I got:

- Battery Grip
- Tamron 28-300mm XR IF
- Quantaray (Sigma OEM) 19-35mm
- Tiffen Basic Filter sets for 62 and 77mm
- Remote Switch (after I found out I coudn't buy jut the connector)
- Lots of CF cards (Lexar 40x and Microdrives)
- X-Drive portable storage
- And soooooo much more...

(Yeah, my wife hates me... :( )

Since I got all that stuff I've:

- made my parents happy with more photos of the grandkids
- Made myself smile with some of my nicer photos
- made the gumpy wife smile with MUCH better shots of our daughters
- Saved a co-workers wedding when his photographer dropped out at last minute (yeah... I actually didn't screw it up and even the not so great ones can be fixed in photoshop)
- Got some great shots for work as well!

When you weigh all that I don't mind having spent the extra couple of bucks buying it when I did... :D

I wrote on another forum I thought it would stop being discounted and go back to full price. This certainly seems to be the case in the UK, where the 10D is unavailable at present with long waiting lists.

Before anyone rushes to these guys they should check their credentials at www.resellerratings.com. I wouldn't put my money with them!!!

There are currently 1200 back orders for the 10D to the UK photo store jessops - and that is only one photo chain! Jessops will be recieving 800 units soon, so some of those will be cleared...

I had mine on order for 2 weeks at Jessops before they remembered to tell me that actually, it would be about 2 months... great communication there!! It was weird because I had been in about a week previous to making my order, and they had 2 in stock, and I was told they always would have.

I cancelled my order and got it from the London Camera Exchange, who just happened to have one in that had not been snapped up.

The 10D is going back up to the price it first hit the streets and in some cases list. That's if you can find one!

Why would the arrival of the 300D drive down the price of the 10D? I would love to hear the logic behind this. Canon and its dealers will keep the 10D prices as high as the market will allow. To put it in simple terms - would you take a pay or pocket money cut (for the kids on here) and still do the same work when you didn't have to?

The 300D (or Rebel for the US) is aimed at the college student, soccer mom and anyone who would have bought a prosumer P&S. Don't confuse the two models or the markets they are aimed at.
