What is the benefit of using a set of Hoya Macro filters for taking macro photos? Does it increase the magnification? Excuse my ignorance, which is the reason for my asking. Also what size should I buy if I decide to do so? The 58mm ones?

Thanks
~Adam

If you're talking about the +1, +2 & +4 set, yes.
And they'll reduce the minimum focus distance - from object to camera.

I don't really see much improvement with the set (even if combined into +7), I saw extreme macro shots on the web, they were using at least +20 (2x +10) with tele lens combination (2x)

Thanks for the info bigpow. I'll have to run some searches to see if I can find anything else out.

Anyone else have any experience with the set bigpow mentioned?

No, but I understand the Canon close up (macro) lens, 250D is better matched to the camera for focus and achromatic correction. There are posts here from people having focus and other aberration problems with third party lenses. Of course cost is a factor too...

After looking around and learning I found a very good alternate solution to the somwhat big original Conon close-up lens. I bought the Hoya +5 ACHROMATIC lens with 49mm thread.
Before this I had the tiffen +7 and +10 combo with 43mm thread. I was a bit frustrated because the chromatic abberation made the outer approximate 20% on each side of the picture "decorated"with blue and orange seams along the lines of strong contrasts. This left me with less the half of the area - only the center of the picture - with an acceptable quality.
Now I have since more than three months a 43 to 49mm step-up ring with the Tiffen tube and the Hoya +5 achromatic lens. With the zoom extended to 21mm this gives a good distance to the object so there is not yet shading from the lens and not too much frightening to butterflies.
