View Full Version : Counterfeit D30 Camera?

I'm new to this forum, so this may have been addressed already. I have been looking on ebay at D30s and recently D60 cameras, and plan to buy one near the end of this year or early next year. Yesterday I saw a D30 on ebay advertised as "new in the box". That doesn't sound right. Then yesterday evening I got an email from someone who offered to sell me a "new in the box" D30 for $500, as long as I did it outside of ebay. Now it really doesn't sound right. Then when I looked at D60 cameras on ebay I found one of those "new in the box".

Are there still "new in the box" D30 and D60 cameras out there?

Also, is there such a thing as counterfeit Canon D30 and D60 cameras?

Thank you,

Tim Glover

probably not but there are such things as scams on ebay...

if it sounds to good to be true then it probably is.

Hi Tim,

I seriously doubt that anyone would want to counterfeit the D30 or the D60. When the D30 first came out it was the top of the range semi pro camera on the digital market. Now most pocket size happy snappers are capable of achieving higher resolution and better results. That is why the prices seem to be dropping like mad. We have ended up in a whirlpool of technology which seems to be spinning out of control. If the newly announced 300D with its 6.3 Meg resolution will cost about 500 GBP, why spend any more on a camera with much lower specs? Shops who had stocked up with the D30 and D60 are stuck with their stock as more advanced, better spec'd newer models cost only a fraction at new price.

$500 for a D30? It is a lot of cash, even for a brand new boxed camera with those specs.

DO NOT make a deal woth someone who E-mails you and requests to make a sale "Outside of E-bay"

It is a sure fire scam,. no question. If he had an actual camera to sell,. and we KNOW that you can get $750.00 easy for a USED D30,. whay would he sell a NEW D30 for $500.00???? Remeber,. he is virtually GUARANTEED $750.00 if he auctions it!?

Also,. please read your USRER AGREEMENT with E-bay.

IT Strictly Forbids this kind of sale. If you forward this scam artists e-mail to E-bay,. his account may be banned.

If you want a D30 check the Auctions. Or,.. wate a few weeks and grab a 300/Rebel D brand new for $900.00 :)

Thanks guys.

I wondered why it seems all of a sudden there are brand new cameras popping up on ebay.

Being a smart aleck, I replied to his email this morning with a copy of ebay's policy on what he was trying to do.

I am simply amazed at the cameras available out there now. My Minolta XGM is 20 years old, and recently started getting pretty fussy when it was hot outside. I don't make a living with it (obviously) but do make a couple of dollars at the racetrack with it on occasion.

I think I want to get a digital SLR camera versus one of the lower priced offerings, but am not really sure of the difference between the lower priced cameras and the digital SLR cameras. I do know my Minolta has taken excellent pictures (if I do the f-stops and all the other stuff right).

their is no such thing as counterfeit digital camera's. the only counterfeit cameras are copies of old classics.
their are however camera's that are boxed with all the paperwork that are older models that were not used much and traded in to a dealer or sold on ebay etc.
people sell them as new when indeed they had previous
ownership and are used in like new condition. their is also the ebay scam where someone just steals your money and sends a used camera outside of ebay.
buyer beware. most small independent camera stores are reputable and will tell you if the camera was actually a trade in. don't waste your money buying "a deal" on an older model. you can get a new eos 10d body for
$1499.00 and the new rebel digital body for $900.00
next month. www.photostop.net

If you search this forum for the terms ebay scam, you will find several threads relating to digital camera sales scams. Be very careful buying a camera online. Big tipoffs for scams are

-sellers who want to sell "off ebay"
-sellers who want you to western union payment
(They come up with some ornate scheme to "assure" you that your money cannot be obtained until you receive the camera)
-transactions which are overseas (particularly belgium and russia)

I had one guy try to scam me... I played along for a while. He offered to ship me the camera before I sent payment by WU (yeah, right--- like any legit seller would do that). He then emailed me UPS tracking info, copies of the shipping labels, etc. for the package and asked for payment. What he did was transmit the shipping info to UPS electronically, getting it into their system, but never actually shipping anything. Needless to say, nothing ever arrived.

"New in Box" isn't always the same as "new with factory warranty." "New in box" can be a marketing term meaning "in excellent condtion with all packagaing materials."

I wouldn't be concerned if the thing was "new with factory warranty" or "totally broken beyond all repair" since you'll pay the $500 and not get anything at all anyway.

EBay has a huge number of camera scams. (It's really unfortunate.)

I was (just for fun) WATCHING the bidding on a Canon 600mm f/4, Nikon 600mm f/4, and Minolta 600mm f/4 all "new with factory warranty" and offered by the SAME guy. (Funny that someone with 0 feedback would simultaneously place these items and about $250k more of stuff all simultaneously and without reserve.) I was going to post a link to the sellers auctions for your entertainment, but the guy has already been taken out by eBay.

Not to worry though, EXACTLY THE SAME items have now shown up under a different name. Here's the URL... have fun but don't press the "bid" button! Better hurry, this account probably won't last very long either. :)

Aargh ... I should have known this a little earlier!!! I just spend 1400 US$ on L-lenses for my D30 not knowing that I could get better quality from a pocket cam - stupid me!

Almost the same experience here, but the Spain deal sounded too fishy from the start, so I moved on..The guy kept emailing me trying to tell me that I would be real stupid if I let the deal go..

I've bought a bunch of stuff off eBay (190+ positive feedbacks) including a used D30 and used sigma 70-200 2.8 APO which were both in excellent condition and have been working GREAT! The key to not getting hosed on eBay is feedback, feedback, feedback! Look for sellers with 100's of positives and at least 98% positive. Almost all sellers are going to have some negatives because you can't just please some people. And I would NEVER buy from someone with zero feedback. Also it helps to use Paypal and buy from a seller that is Paypal verified - this offers additional protection.

Heheh, yeah, I also laughed at that statement by Kees Terberg. I don't have a D30, but that's a pretty silly thing to say unless you're only comparing pure resolution. Hello, real depth of field control, usable ISO sensitivity above 100 ASA, f1.2 lenses?

Jorge, I love your Asia photo album, by the way. Great stuff.

(Too bad you didn't use a pocket digicam to shoot it, it would have turned out waaaay better! :D Okay, I'll stop now :) )

I bought my D60 used, but I made a point to meet the seller in person so I could check for excessive hot pixels, back focusing, scams. I don't think it's worth the heartburn to try saving a few hundred bucks with some deal that's too good to be true. I've pretty much given up on EBay, and I just use it to try to determine what a good used price is for local pickup.
