I managed to take advantage of the fine afternoon yesterday. I decided this time instead of going north to travel south and explore some of South Ayrshire.

Bruces Stone, Glentrool

This stone marks the 1307 Battle of Glentrool. Robert the Bruce, with fewer than 200 followers, surprised and ambushed a 2,000 strong force of foot soldiers led by Armer de Valence. Bruce had learned of the enemy's intention to pass along a narrow pathway a few feet above Loch Trool, and ordered his men to send boulders hurtling down on the English. Some were crushed to death, others swept into the loch to drown, and the remainder fell to the swords of the Scots. This was Bruces first victory on the long march to Independance.

As these are a bit different from my usual lochs, C+C welcome:)

you're absolutely right. I have been too guilty in the past of just heading up north, when there are a lot of interesting places closer at hand. Looks like I will be planning a few more trips 'down south';)

Lovely strax. I particularly like the stony composition and lighting of the first shot, and the history lesson was an added bonus. :)

Very nice.
Looks like a summers day.

Did you manage any shots of Loch Trool ?
And did you lay claim to any particular tree. ;)

I did, but shots from above and nothing worth posting. By the time we got there it was early evening, so didn't really have a chance to walk down to the Loch. I'll have to save that for another day;)

And did you lay claim to any particular tree.

I might have, but I'm keeping it all to myself:)

Nice one Strax. I was on holiday in Straiton a couple of years ago (at Blairquhan) and took a photo of the falls too. Although we were sent back to the car by midges! :(

Luckily yesterday was midge free, plus they don't seem to like me as I very rarely get bitten:D

The last time i was there the falls were covered with frost (i took one, never got to post it) and the stone wasn`t even worth photographing.
At least you managed to have a fairly nice day, lovely colours and the comp.of the stone is great.

Tuesday turned out really nice after the rainy last few days, and luckily I caught the stone just before the sun was starting to set, so the light was kind
