Beach vacation snapshot. Not much photoshopping, other than contrast enhancement (levels), and Pekka's "normal sharpening" action with +5 saturation. Shifting the black and white points (levels sliders) made the colors a bit more dramatic.

Looks noiser here than the original - too much jpegging I guess; sorry.

There's not much to fault here it's really good. The only thing is that bottom right of the photo has gone to black for some reason? Also I think the pic needs to be finished with some kind of simple frame. Anyway, great shot.

Martin.

Great shot. Lively colours, though the photo does come across as a tad on the dark side.

On my Mac monitor the shot looks perfect. Not too dark. Very very neat image.

Hi,
Great picture. What camera do you use? And what additional equipment one needs to shot something like that? Also, can you explain please what's "normal sharpening"?
Thanks

Nice shot Mitch. Mind sharing the exif info on this?

Hi folks; thanks for all the comments.

EXIF for Conk: 1/750s, f8.0, at 38mm. In hindsight I should have used a smaller aperture and slower shutter, but I had been tracking gulls in "sport" mode the night before and forgot to switch modes for this morning shot.

msvadi: this was taken with a 10D and Canon 28-135 IS lens, with no additional filters. "Normal sharpening" is simply Pekka's sharpening action within his 10D workflow tools. You can download the action from this site if you do a search for it.

Martin and others: I didn't intend for the bottom right to go to black, but that's where it ended up when I squeezed the levels sliders a little bit. I wish it had a touch of color like the bottom left, but I guess the darkness of the clouds above prevented the light from hitting it as much.

Thanks again.

Even though you say a smaller aperture and slower shutter would have been more suitable (and I do agree) the photo came out reasonably well with the frontal lighting and no lens flair. I guess that's the difference in the jump to the 10D. A wider range in settings.
Still, a very brilliant shot.
