Picked up my 10D today from a local retail camera shop @ the normal price. I would like to know is it a must to load up the software that comes with the camera? I'm already using Adobe's Photo Album, Elements 2 & Photoshop 7. I try not to load anything I don't really need, all replies wecomed.

If you shoot in RAW you will need to download a RAW converter. You can use Canon's File Viewer Utility included in your software bundle but you will find that it is slow and clunky.

Try CaptureOne or BreezeBrowser for free. Keep in mind that you will need to pay to keep using it but they are both well worth it.

You can also use the Photoshop RAW plugin for an extra $100 but I think you gotta do a workaround adjustment to get it to work with the 10D. I haven't tried it so I wouldn't really now how good it works.

If you shoot just JPEG dont bother with the Software bundle, you already have everything you need.

Congratulations on your purchase you will fall in love with your 10D. Don't be discouraged if you don't initially get the results you want, there is indeed a learning curve, especially if you are accustomed to a point and shoot camera.

Good luck and welcome to the family.

I already have PS 7 on my computer, but have never used it. I just installed the software bundle from my 10D (minus PS 2). Is it supposed to take that long to transfer imaged from my camera to my PC??? Am I doing something wrong?

Yes it's very slow, this is due to the USB 1.1 tranfer protocol.

To go faster you probably need a dedicated compact flash USB 2.0 reader device. check that it reads CFI and CF II ;)

But if your PC is quite old with no USB 2.0 then i have no solution ! maybe be you have a firewire interface plug on your PC.

I am not sure what the difference is between USB and USB 2.0, but I gots me a fire wire. How can I use it, do I need to by a flash card reader for fire wire?

You paid ~$600 for Photoshop 7 and you've never used it!

I use a Firewire CF card reader on my Mac. It is a must have for RAW and HiRes files, USB1 is just too slow.

Wombat,

We are also all Mac. What Firewire compact flash reader are you using? Do you have to buy special compact flash cards? Have (2) of the 512K and (1) of the 1GB CF cards for the 10D and it is way too slow to download to the G4 laptops with USB1.1

Did we get the wrong kind of CF cards?

What was the price on your reader and where did you purchase it from?

Thanks

Ciao, bello.

I don't have a Mac but use PC. After I got my 10D the larger files were too slow downloading for me (I use a card reader). I investigated and ended up buying a USB 2.0 card with four USB 2.0 outlets and also had to purchase a Lexar USB 2.0 card reader. I am now a HAPPY camper. It is MUCH faster and more pleasant to use. All told, with me doing the work, it cost under $100 for the total upgrade.

Good luck!

OK, I have a fire wire I installed for my video editing and an older USB port(about 3 years old that came with my Dell). This is still a little confusing to me. Which will give me the fastest speed. If I use a USB 2.0 in an old USB (I am assuming it is a 1.0 port) is it just as fast or should I just use Firewire. I notice there are not a lot of Firewire readers. I am using a Promaster 256mb flash card in my 10D. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have the PS Raw Plugin and it does not work with D10 it works great with my 1D however. I hope that adobe writes a patch or someting so that I can get it to work with the 10D It is like haveing a digital negative. and the abilith to rework photos to perfection just like in the dark room with a negative. Ir works with the D30 D60 !d and the 1Ds but not the D10.

I'm also from the video world.
- 10D does not have a firewire port. It would be nice, but no. Best you can do is use a firewire CF card reader. I haven't ever used one.
- Diff betw USB 1 and 2 is that 2 is the new standard, and its faster. Most new PCs come with one. Your 3 year old USB port is 1.0. Anything designed to work with 2.0 will work at 1.0 speeds when plugged into your 1.0 port. However, you can upgrade your PC to the new USB standard by getting a 2.0 card.

Personally I don't think you get much benefit versus cost unless you're downloading en masse and often.

the adobe raw plugin will work with the 10D if you 'patch' it. check the archives. one caveat, the profile used to patch it is fron the d60. some feel the conversion might not be exactly the same. i have seen no problems however, and it works well with the browser in PS
