Here is another sequence I shot about a month ago of the band The Lashes. This was an in-store radio sponsored event, prior to their show later that evening. They had just returned from LA that morning after playing the Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn the night before.

I like these a lot. VERY Sharp, nice contrast, great use of frame...the first one is my favorite. I really like how you focused on the guitar on the next two also...Not a huge fan of the last two...while they are very well taken - in focus, nice bokeh...the expression on his face is kinda boring...would like to see more emotion coming out of those.

Thank you very much! Here is a more emotive one of the singer for you. Like most nights, I'm there to shoot the guitarist. But, It's always nice to spread the love. :D

:) Much more expressive! I likey! :) What lens did you use on these? "L" glass I'm assuming! I want rich sharp images like that but I can't afford those lenses yet! :) I just purchased the 50mm 1.4 and I hope that will help improve my shots.

LOL! Can you say sleep deprivation? You are correct...was the The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on 02/23/06 that I should have been referring to. So these shots are from Friday the 24th.
You can check the band out at www.thelashes.com (http://www.thelashes.com)

Thanks! I was using a combination of the 70-200 2.8L IS, 17-40L, and the 50 1.4 for these shots.

In-Store Promo ... an interesting opportunity. Nice shots although the lighting isn't flattering.

I shot an in-store last summer at Tower Records....I think it's to be expected.....that crazy flourescent lighting...gotta work w/ what you got! Personally I feel these shots give off a this clean essance/vibe about them. Art is subjective though, huh.

Exactly. A lot of times you have to make due with what is available. I would love to be able to dictate controlled lighting, and I do it when I can...etc. But, when you're under the gun, you need to produce. I think it lends an air of honesty to the whole thing. Often, rock and roll isn't all about sold out arenas and pretty colors of stage lights. It's about the quieter moments.
My mantra is. "it's always about the story". I look at Leibovitz's work and it's not all about being flattering in a classical sense. There is a style between editorial and portraiture, finding that balance is the trick for me and it depends on who is looking for what. In my other thread about The 88, Steve noticed the guitar. That confirmed for me that I was successfull that night, as the shoot was about the guitar.
In the end it's all good! (sometimes) :D

I really like the first one. Classic album sleeve type shot with all the amps and leads etc. Not sponsered by epiphone are they hahaha?
