View Full Version : SWEET JESUS, lost photographic virginity today to supermodel

I'm a vulgar man, it's sooo hard to resist sexual innuendo. And I'm sorry for such a pointless thread - please understand you people are all I have to understand - and I've barely been here.
I just received my:
- 30D
- Sigma EX 18-50
- Canon F4 70-200L
I moved from a G3 I purchased in 2003.
One really really nice thing about going without is that you appreciate what you get so much more. I can't begin to describe the FRIGGIN EXUBERANCE, I have playing with this new crap. Why did I tolerate the G3 for so long? It's like I have lost my virginity, but this time, I can appreciate it and take my time.
I wouldn't even know where to begin. The images are so sharp. The focus is so mother-of-god fast. On both lenses. The camera is so quiet. I have an old 420 flash - I didn't know it STROBED. I smacked that 30D into high speed mode and just fired away in my garage with my mouth agape and my eyes bulging. IT STROBES!?
1600 ISO? Bokeh? Selectable focus points!? DOF preview?
I can't breathe. I work graveyard, I'm supposed to sleep.
This was so worth not telling my wife about the 70-200L. I'm supposed to buy a crib, but I don't see why an air matress can't work for a newborn. Women.
I've had a long road to this point as goofy as that sounds. Being in a position to pay for such luxuries was never a default for me.
Thanks for indulging me. Off to bed. I'll ride this blip of joy for as long as I can.

Don't ditch the G3 though, it'll still be useful for two things.
Times when you dont want to carry (or risk loosing) you new camera
Taking photos of you new kit so you can set them as the desktop on your computer and gently stroke the screen whenever you miss them.

Thanks everyone, a few posts had my tea shooting up into my nose.
Why wife asked if my camera is destroying us, thinking that her face might be an exquisite photographic opportunity, I spun around with it in high speed mode in "portrait" picture style of course. As she sobbed, I shot away, testing out the flash, the zoom, and focus speed. It was so much fun.
Of course I'm kidding. That was for the hall monitor on page one. But why wife did ask if the camera was "killing us." However, she prefaced the question with "Beefcake, do you think..." so I knew that my continual hopping around in my underwear would be tolerable a little while longer.

I can relate, I noticed a charge for $140 on our bank statement to a store that shall remain unnamed (hrm Felgers) and upon inquiry I found out that it was shoes for my 14 month old. The only comment made was "$140 dollars for shoes and he can barely walk?" To which she replied "but they are so cute" I proceeded directly the internet and made a purchase. I dont remember exactly what I bought or where I bought it from but know this. It was photographic in nature and cost more than $140.

I often wonder if the "Hall Monitor" types would really be much happier living under Taliban rule with their every word monitored and their wives silent and in Burqa's. Dwight,
I have more respect for people who are articulate enough and mature enough to express their delight without having to reference Jesus and virginity. IMO, that is inappropriate in a forum that is visited by all sorts of people, including minors and Christians. If someone wants to "expose their feelings in whatever manner comes to mind" he/she has to realize that there are consequences for inappropriate "exposures". Learning that is part of growing up.
Anyway, this is a super thread and really gives meaning to life, eh? :D :D :D

He was excited, let him have some fun. The post wouldn't have shown the same level of excitement if it was titled "got a 30D and some lenses which was nice"
Worrying about the use of the word virginity (somebody save the children!!!) in a forum that has a glamor/nude section seems a little odd, and I'm sure the religous folks can handle the occasional sweet Jesus. It almost sounds like a politely religous version of "sh*t yeah" anyway so is probably the better option. :)

No worries everyone on the distractors, who, need I point out, have common internet manners. I'm well aware of the risks of being open and personable on the internet. Absolutely no problem. My post, more embarrasing after the initial rush, was just reflective of that moment. Too bad even such trivial things are controversial.
CorruptedPhotographer, I think the 70-200L box will be better for the baby, it also has a lot of styrofoam for comfort. :D

Yes - maybe so But let's not forget that there are also younger members on this forum Plus there are those of us who sometimes have children reading these posts. I also use profanities and sexual innuendo BUT in the correct place. Just because people don't subscribe to the gospel according to DwightMcCann doesn't automatically make them wrong. As far as the implied personal insults that follow the Hall Monitor types - You are wrong on every count. I have no concern how anyone behaves as long as the behaviour is appropriate to the situation.

I think people are just tired of feeling bullied by over senstive people. Why must 99 people adjust their behavior because 1 person has emotional baggage? This thread has received over 2000 views and only several curmudgeon posts attempting to create a sense of guilt or shame where none should exist. Their comments were pretentious and self-important.
Hopefully this is the final say in my thread, if POTN preserves thread ownership to the OP. If you want to discuss this, I'm happy to debate as nauseam in off topic where your posts should be anyway.

hahaha. because when you sit on the edge of the air mattress, it will toss your baby lol. Anyways, so what are the major differences you experienced switching from G3 to DSLR?
That's a funny image... maybe not an air matress then. :D
The first thing I notice about moving from the G3 to the 30D, and I mean the difference is tremendous:
- low light focusing
- low light performance (much higher ISO range)
- general focus performance
- focal range (obvious one I know, but still a major difference)
- burst shooting
I lost many, many great wildlife and baby shots (same thing I guess) with my G3 because of the slowness in focusing. I lost a great shot of a fox because of the slow startup time on the G3 for example. And of course only being able to take one picture every 2 or 3 seconds was very limiting at times too.
But an aspect which I thought I would miss involves moving from using a LCD screen for shooting to the viewfinder. With the LCD, I had flexibility and was able to be in candid conversations taking pictures without a huge camera stuck to my face. So I *thought* the G3 would have an advantage here.
Nope. The 30D, after people get used to it, allows me to do a better job here. For one, I'm not fiddling with the camera all of the time trying to get to perform, and I think this was a major distraction for my photographic victims. Now I just pick the camera up, adjust the ISO if need be (gotta get that 50mm 1.4), and start shooting. I can pay more attention to the facial expressions of my 'model' and less attention to my stupid camera settings.

Exactly why I will always make note of the Hall Monitors ... they are bullies, they expect others to cowtow to them, and their critical comments are offensive. They do not comment on the issues of the thread but only what they personally find offensive. They should just skip it, but that's not in their overbearing personalities. I also note that while I don't call them out by name but only comment on this style of behavior, they are generally so vindictive and self-righteous that they are incapable of demonstrating the same restraint and seem compelled to make it personal. All of these things are signs of small, self centered, rigid, immature personalities.

But, for me personally, my wife and I work as a team. In a team environment, where the same goal is shared, any deviation from that plan requires some dicsussion... So our plan is to make sure our baby, being discharged from gestation this summer, has plenty of 'stuff.' We also have a plan to save up 6 months of expenses per convetional wisdom.
And then here comes me, with an itch to blow 2500 bucks. And, whew, I gotta away with it.

Harumph...as a minor, I am not in the least bit worried that someone referenced to virginity - its not like they stripped off and took pictures of themselves and posted them here...is it:confused::rolleyes:
Anyway...what kind of age are the youngest here...surely theres no-one below 14 or so...I'm sure most 14 year olds aren't completely offended by mentioning virginity...
as for christians...
*Note to minors offended by the word virginity and christians...no offence is intended... (and yes, I overuse ...)
Congratulations on your new camera...I hope you enjoy it as much as I will enjoy mine (I hope) when I can eventually afford it (obviously without a flash...but the 350D built in flash can still make a wonderful strobe :D)

Same experience here...but on a smaller, less expensive scale. My daughter is 14 and instead of a crib (or air mattress), I'm paying for braces.
I just moved from a 5-year old Olympus C-3040 to a used Digital Rebel + kit lens, new 50mm f1.8, and a used Canon 100-300mm f5.6 that I picked up for $31 (has a scratch on the front).
I share every bit of your enthusiasm. No more tedious menu searches just to change the ISO, no more ruined shots due to blown highlights and a ridiculous amount of CA...I could go on and on.
Other than learning how to keep things clean -- sensor cleaning for both of us, and that memorable experience of diaper changing in your household -- things are looking up.
Congrats to both of us.

Wow, did you ever get a good deal on everythying. Dbl congrats to you for the best budget getup I've heard of.
And, it IS a difference, isn't it? Yeah, the ISO changes - ON THE FLY! No menus. Just BAM. Focus modes? Did you ever hear of such a thing? I take my camera and put it on my bedside every night. No shift. That way when I wake up and can't fall back asleep, or in the morning, I can pick it up and play with it again with the manual. I'm trying to get this white balance thing down. On the 30D, not sure about the Rebel, there's this ability to customize white balance with this ongodly looking technical graph. to navigate the white balance "offset" you have to use this joystick...
fun stuff. Thanks for the post. :)

It was photographic in nature and cost more than $140.
that's one of the funniest and greatest things I've ever read in these forums.
I went and got my girlfriend so she could hear the post....it was that good
thanks for sharing. :p
