I've switched to RAW-only on my G6, and I won't go back.

For free software, you can't beat Raw Shooter Essentials (www.pixmantec.com). Personally, I liked their premium edition enough to buy it.

G6 RAW is wonderful. If you have CS2 ACR or RSP, most pix can be processed and saved and don't need to go to PS.

I'll be honest, I just got my new 30D with some L Lenses and was comparing the effective focal lengths of my G6 to the new 30D with 17-40L and was suprised to see the quality or the G6 was ever bit as good as the 30D.
As far as your posted question - using RAW with a G6 I think is just as good as this 30D will be. I was only using auto mode as I was just wanting to compare sizing difference of the images and I am sure the quality is much beter in 30D out of the camera after you learn to get all the settings like you want (customized). But I would think comparing RAW to RAW the only improvement the 20D would give would be the added quality of the lens used and the lens on the G6 seems to be a great lens.

i believe the sensor differs too, 20D has bigger one and noiseless than G6

i'm using dcraw + netpbm to extract the data from my RAW and rather happy with them

i wonder if any RAW conversion algorythm better than dcraw exists (except of native Canon one ;)) ... but will try to compare

There are several comparisons of RAW converters available on the net. "Better" probably depends a lot on your needs. Portrait photographers concentrate heavilly on skin tone rendering, which differs significantly between algorithms. I lean towards RSE/RSP because the workflow is very efficient for me.

Check http://www.sphoto.com/techinfo/rawconverters/rawconverters.htm for some comparisons. I haven't seen any that included dcraw, though. If you do some tests, I'm sure folks here would be interested in the results!
