Also the luminosity is basically the same throughout the image instead of having larger areas of dark and light.

You tell you are trying BW techniques. Is this a conversion? What conversion technique did you use? With what settings? What does the original color version look like?
I agree on the busy picture. Try cropping out some of the surroundings... I like the subject of the photo.

...Or just wait until the leaves come in. Bare trees are nearly worthless in these situations...
