Note,. the 18-55 bundled with the Digital Rebel (300D) will NOT be available for sale seperately? So if you get the Rebel,. it will be in your best interests to get the lens either way. Even if you never use it,. you will be able to make a tidy profit on E-bay!

The second lens is a 55-200mm It seems to be unclear as to weather this lens also will only work with the Rebel. or if it will work with all of Canon's 1.6X Digitals?

The reason the EF-S 18-55 won't work with anything but the 300D at this time is it extends further into the camera in order to provide a wider angle. The 55-200 should work fine and this is my understanding, unless I read something wrong on the Canon site.

I still want my digital wide angle zoom for my 10D that gives me at least a 105 degree arc on the image, without going fisheye. I would like one of those also, but don't feel the need yet, I figure I can wait until I can afford a FF.

In the meantime, if the 300D had been available when I got my D60, I would probably not been as into lenses as I am. Buying a $1500 lens for a $1500 camera makes since, buying one for a $800 camera (figuring on-line; give it a couple of months price) would be a bit much. Also there would be no need with the 28-55, 55-200 combo.

Just my opinion,

hmmm ... a $1500 lens on an $800 camera makes perfect sense to me ... its the glass that gives you quality photos... and good glass can be used on better bodies in the future... cheap glass willl ALWAYS be just cheap glass!

my 2 cents

Where is the link for news about the 55-200 lens? I could not find it but I am interested to read more about it!

Is this an alternative to 70-200 L glass, or something cheaper?

Is this an alternative to 70-200 L glass,
I doubt it, as the camera is desigend for the consumer market who are unlikely to need 'L' glass. More likely at the same level as the current EF55-200 MKIII

"Also announced at the same time is an EF-mount 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM zoom, which in concert with the 18-55mm lens will give Digital Rebel owners an equivalent focal range from 28.8 to 320mm."

-from the 1st paragraph of the link I provided in the initial post of this thread-

As the aperture is f/4.5-5.6,... this lens is in fact a peice of crap! f/4.5 @55mm????? Maybe it's a misprint,. but even the Sigma 50-500mm has f/4 @ 50mm lol :)

I must be blind! I was thinking there would be a cool picture to go along with the story ...

Right. I will continue trying to find a 70-200 f4 L ... : )

The new 55-200 USM lens has MTF charts very similar to the 75-300 IS USM, and that lens (I have one) has a very soft and low contrasted image, so probably the new lens isn't very sharp or contrasted either. Ths EFS 18-55 seems to be a very different beast, with MTF similar to the 28-135 IS USM, fact that seems to support Canon claims (they say the 18-55 have a image quality similar to the 28-135), but the MTF only reach 13mm, instead of the classic 22mm, because is a "digital only" 1,6x lens, so if you are not very careful it seems to be better than in reality it is.

This is something I find interesting. Will other lenses work on the 300D as well? What if I want to put a 16-35 or say a 14mm on this lens or a 300 f4? Will I still be able to mount these lenses? I was interested in this camera strictly as a back up but now with the *S* mount, I wonder if I can. Also, does anyone know if I can use the same battery grip as the 10D on this new Rebel digital SLR?

The answer to your question is a big "yes". The Rebel Digital will take both the EF lenses and the new ES-S
lens(es).

But the answer here is a big "no". The Rebel Digital uses the BG-E1 grip while the 10D uses the BG-ED3. I guess that makes sense due to the fact that the dimension of the two cameras are different all around.
