Not the best but......

I just felt the need to post in the new Birds section ! I have been told it is a Great Crested Grebe and it sort of crept up on me. So much so that I was fortunate enough to be able to focus on it as it was rather close. My lens has a massive minimum focus distance.
I have had to reduce this piccy to a pixel width of 525, from an original 3504, to get below 100kB. Is this right or is there a better way please.

Fascinating bird.. in some ways similar and yet quite different from the Grebs I have seen in my neck of the woods. I't body is mostly submerged like a Loon.. and has a very "loonlike" eye,.

As for file size and image dimensions,. using a compressed jpeg you should have no trouble getting a decent image at 800 pixels wide. If you have Photoshop click "save for web" and then reduce to 800 pixels wide and "60%" quality/compression.. see if that does it.

Thank you guys. Gary, It is a diving bird so I don`t know whether it had just surfaced or, having seen me, was just on its way down again. I was also very close, about 4 metres, and the angle of the shot may not have helped. Another shot may give you a better idea of the true size. Not a good shot at all but taken from a fair distance.
