Trying to decide on a Canon 5.0MP A530 1.8 LCD or a CANON SD 450 5.0MP. Which one in your opinions had a better picture quality? I have 20D but need something small to fit in my pocket. Besides the obvious features and control difference is one superior over the other?

Cheers

Can't speak for the A530, but my daughter has the sd450. Definately pocketable, nice 2.5 inch lcd, virtually no shutter lag. It's the 2nd digital elph that she's had (replaced s200), both are well made, take excellant pix, the sd450 also seems to have a pretty decent movie mode, based on some of the concert footage she has shot.

I dont have either camera, but my Dad has the A530 and I bought my daughter the SD450. The electronics of both are pretty much the same and although you would think the A530 has a better lens (and therefore picture quality) I cannot notice any difference in the quality of the prints generated with either camera. I think it boils down to size, and as you already have a 20D, I would recommend the SD450 (the large LCD is very nice too) which is very compact.

I had the same dilemma last week - same two cameras. I decided to buy a small camera, until the S3 IS came out and ultimately chose the SD450 - I got mine last Friday.

My reasons, it's smaller, thinner and lighter (than the 530), the pictures *seem* to be slightly better quality, larger LCD, slightly quicker startup time & it just looks better.

The major benefits I saw for the 530 were the fact that it uses AA batteries and the price.

Since you want to get it for travelling, you will have to consider the fact that the SD450 uses a lithium battery and will have to be recharged after every 150 shots or so. I think AA batteries are more convenient when travelling, but the power consumption on the SD450 is pretty good, and once you charge it, you should be good for a day or so of shooting. If you're shutter happy and decide on the SD450, then I recommend getting a second battery.

Hope this is helpful...

Comparing the stats side by side, the A530 seems to have it all--except the size. The SD is nice and small but thats about all it has going for it. What do you think? The 530 is getting a bigger sensor (slightly) more optical zoom, more control, cheaper price (up here in canada anyway) better Av range. I would love the size of the SD but it the extra 79 bucks worth it? Opinions welcome.

I can't speak of the other, but I just got a A530 for my wife to replace our Kodak DC3400 (2.1 MP). It's really a nice camera with some decent feautures. I bought it mainly because she is clueless when it comes to my 20D and honestly I'd rather her not touch it. The Kodak still works well, but it seriously lacked in low light. This A530 being capable of ISO800 is just what she needed. The prints I've seen from this camera are very good considering the PnS nature of the camera.

I got the A A540 6.0 mega . Great little cam! Fast! No shutter lag and fast focus! Much nicer than the SD's or the A530. It has FEC also! Nice and small, good MP, lots of features and the price was decent.
