I'm about to venture out onto a mountain lake in my small pontoon boat with a tripod. Does anyone have any idea if I should use IS with a tripod in this situation. My guess is, I would, but I hate to take a whole bunch a pictures that look sharp on the view finder, that really are not once I get home.
Anyone have any experience with this?

My personal opinion is that I wouldn't use a tripod on a boat at all. A tripod tends to magnify the effects of the boat rocking, it effectively becomes a camera catapult if you aren't careful. IS.

If the base on which the tripod is on is not steady (ie tripod is on a boat rocking, moving, etc) leave IS on. If tripod is steady turn IS off.

I you need more stability than handheld can give, I suggest using a monopod half-fold insered in your belt. I dont have personal experience of IS in this situation. I would suggest to set it on.
Hope this can help,

For a small boat, I'd leave the tripod at home. Your body will naturally counteract some of the rocking whereas the tripod will not. I would handhold it, leave the IS on, and crank up the shutterspeed as much as possible...even if it means sacrificing some DOF.

Yep I don't think a tripod makes any sense on a small boat. If the boat is not rocking then it's probably OK

thanks for the info everyone. I'll try it with and without. I'll be going very early in the morning, so low light will be an issue, we'll see how it works out.
