Cost of memory cards is a very minor issue. You must have the computing power to effectively process very large files. With a lot of layer work some of mine can reach a gigabyte. And then of course, there's the storage problem. Large initial files require a number of large storage drives, at least a hundred dollars a pop.

If you do not have the support equipment already in place, properly supporting a body that produces large files could easily tack on at least another thousand dollars in cost.

That's precisely it. For my purposes, it's an unnecessary increase in cost to work with files that large as my clients rarely, if ever, order larger than 20x30. For me, 12mp is just fine and 16mp would be ok. 20-24 would just be a pain to work with. I'm talking about having to bring 50-60 gigs of memory to a wedding and having a computer capable of processing all of that in a timely manner. As it is with 12mp images, just transferring the files, importing the RAWs, and creating the 1:1 previews take 3 hours on a Quad 3.2ghz, 8gb ram computer with Velociraptor HDs. After editing, the RAW conversions will take another 4 hours to complete. Plus I have to store the RAW files, full-sized JPEG conversions, reduced size JPEG proofs, slideshow images, album edits, album pages for each of these along with their backups. Multiply this by the number of weddings in a year and suddenly, terabyte drives don't seem that large at all anymore. Now imagine doing all of this with 24mp images.....ouch!

You've just hit on the reason that I took a Canon 1DsIII back to the retailer last month. I got home and already felt guilty about spending £4500 (nearly $9000). I then realised that the files sizes could cripple my PC unless I was VERY strict with my storage options (writing everything to DVD etc). So back it went.

And now the 5D II is on the horizon and all those file sizes are gonna cause problems again. Hopefully the lower cost (compared to the 1Ds) will allow me to invest in a bigger PC

And the 1Dsmk3 is the reason why I have upgraded to 64 bit processing
Now I can get back to 10+ 16 bit panos instead of .jpgs.

I gave up trying to justify the price tag of the 1D.

Hard drive space is cheap.

Wont be happy about a 20+mp 5D though 18 mp should be enought to keep just below the 1Dsmk3 ........

Nice one

You're right - no use trying to justify big outlays. You either want it and buy it or you don't. Be a **** having to buy a new PC as well though :(

Still no word on my original requests:

'A lock or guard on the on/off switch or repositioning - it keeps getting knocked off or on by rubbing on clothing when walking - so it's not on when you need a quick shot - and it is on when you want it off to save battery - no good relying on auto off as it keeps getting touched on one button or another as I walk with it

a lock on the diopter adjustment - so it doesn't have to be reset every 10 mins after brusing against it inadvertanly whilst holding the camera from swinging in the undergrowth';)

If I don't get these requests Im switching to the panasonic G1!

Simpler solution instead of using sRAW. Take a normal RAW file and use ACR to downsize it. That way you'll have the the full resolution when you upgrade your system.

It seems an idea short to mid-term solution?

Well I've already got a bigger PC (quad 2.66Ghz, 8GB RAM, a couple hundred gigs of space to spare for images, FW800 UDMA CF reader) but this will require more/bigger memory cards and hard drives. I was hoping to not be going through those any faster than I already am!

But the truth is that Canon can't afford to underperform now.

I'd agree that Canon Photographic probably can't afford to "underperform" but I don't think I'd be too worried about the solvency of Canon Inc...

I freely admit I don't know a thing about their corporate structure but it's not outside the realm of possibility that the current regieme at the top doesn't put as much stock in the dSLR division as was the case in the past.

Wouldn't be the first time that a business has had a "break even" or a "loss leader" division while the rest of the organization is running on all eight cylinders.

Happens in media circles quite frequently. Movie or Television division may occasionally tank while publishing is going gangbusters, etc...

IIRC the 1st 1/2yr 2008 fiscal report shows that only the DSLR division shows improved performance against 1st 1/2 of 2007.

Hey, Canon's buying more of their own shares:

http://www.canon.com/ir/release/2008/p2008sep16e.pdf

Is this insider information? lol. If the successor to the 5D is being announced this month?

On a more serious note, does anyone know how many 5D's Canon has sold over the years? I'm sure the AE-1 and the F-1 and cameras like that would be at the top of the list, but wonder how the 5D measures up...

so Simon, are you happy with the specs? You got your low fps and your high MP...

I Simonius
17th of September 2008 (Wed), 03:27
So finally it's here, It's no longer a rumour:

Canon EOS 5D Mark II: 21MP and HD movies
Key Specifications:

New 21.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor with improved EOS Integrated Cleaning System (E.I.C.S.) - GOOD
New Full HD 1080 resolution movie recording - might be fun - 'wait and see' feature
3.9 frames per second continuous shooting - don't care don't use MD
High performance DIGIC 4 providing superb image quality - sounds good - lets wait to see results
Maximum 310 large JPEG images in a single burst with a UDMA card- sounds good - lets wait to see results
3.0” VGA (920k dots) Clear View LCD- good
ISO 100-6400 (expansion from 50 up to 25,600)-good
9 AF points + 6 Assist AF points- could have done better

So.. I was right about the release date, the 21MP, the weather sealing, and ...am I satisfied? Well - yes. Not blown away, but satisfied , because the single biggest complaint I had for the 5D was resolution for landscapes, and that has been fixed. Other points I can take or leave, some I like , some I don't ut they're no deal breaker, it was just IQ out of the cameras that I was after and that's what Ive got. -EXCELLENT

So this is the camera I will stay with and shoot until the shutter dies. I'll keep the old 5D as back up or convert to IR

...although I have yet to be convinced it's not a hoax just to have laugh at this thread's expense. Could Canon be that mean? Possibly, but unlikely;)

Well Im off to discuss the camera elsewhere, it's no longer a rumour and doesn't belong here anymore, *sniff*:~( I think this thread will suffer a sense of bereavement,:~( but Im sure it will slowly learn to adapt to its new role of overseer of the other runour threads, offering consolation and advice when the others get forlorn or lost. I;m sure it will accept its place as 'Granny' to the younger threads and a veteran friend to the older threads:D Who knows perhaps this thread will be the first thread to be made a moderator? But that might be a lot of work for one so old ( in thread years) better to allow her to enjoy her retirement;)

Thanks everyone, it's been great fun! nearly 250,000 views and over 2300 replies - has this set the bar for future rumour threads?:p:lol:

Well time I think for a group hug:D

I don't think so. It's probably the same stuff they have on the 40D, sponge gaskets around the doors.

The longest thread I have ever seen on any internet board, did anybody see something longer?!

Time to start a new 3D or 7D rumour thread, as soon as the news about the new cameras are digested!

Oh man, PoTN has MUCH longer threads. Some threads have gotten so big, they've had to close... you can see continuations of them in the general discussion section. They still live under new thread names.

Hey!, no need to get all Renaissance Fair on my a$$ :)

I heard from a friend of a guy who's ex wife had an affair with a man from Japan who's daughter works at the accountant for the vice president of the contractor who removes garbage from Canon's cafeteria that they're removing the Print button from the Mark III.

The only logical name for this camera is the mark II, anybody who claims otherwise obviously doesn't have any insight in marketing logic. Canon should, and will, make a big deal that this is the second generation of consumer full frame where all others merely try to catch up.

I think the next one will be the 5D MK3

No doubt at all in my mind.. and as everyone knows - Im always right;)
(please lets not argue about it:lol:)

I think in fact that after the anti MP posts on the net - supposedly from a canon employee (can't be bothered to post the link ) the next upgrade will be more feature rich over the MPs

i.e. the next MP hike will be by an increment rather than a multiple, which 12 to 21 almost was (i.e. nearly double) and the features we wanted will be there because the 1Ds will be a 50MP monster and it already has all the funky features you could want;)

I'm going to laugh when everyone jumps on the new 5D, then come to find out the price drops $1000 6 months later because of submirror issues or something worse.
:

jealousy cos you can't afford one right now:rolleyes:;)

One of the reason they havent changed the AF etc is probably to avoid exactly that kind of problem

I doubt there'll be any problem with it (5D2) as the camera is virtually identical to the mk1 except for the sensor:D

the 5Dmk3 will be another matter altogether, as technology will have moved to a place we dont even know about yet

So the real question is now... how many MP can they get into the 1DsM4 without loosing IQ. Seeing where the medium format cameras are going, I'm starting to hope for better lossless compression.

And then, of course, the next question is "At what point does the MPixels out-resolve the entire Canon lens line up?"

From what Ive been reading over the last few months here and there I believe there is new technology in the pipeline.

I doubt they'll upgrade the 5D to Mark 3 for a while but doubt it'll be another 3 yrs this time

The biggest request I think has been for better AF and I think we might get an incremental; improvement within 18 months on that;)
